List of Books
INTRODUCTION
For half a century the traditional sources of information on Polish music history were limited to Marguerite Walaux's forty-four pages of The National Music of Poland and Ethel Rayson's Polish Music and Chopin, Its Laureate of sixty-four pages, both published in England in 1916. After World War II, the first publication in English about Polish music history came out of Great Britain in the form of a thirty-two booklet by Jerzy Sulikowski entitled Polish Music and published by the Polish Publications Committee in 1944. This was followed by another informative, but brief twenty-page pamphlet, Musical Life in Poland Today by Janusz Urbański, printed by the Polish Cultural Institute in London in 1953. The first book in English published in Poland appeared in 1955; it was written by Zofia Lissa and stresses a Marxist view of music history. Three other excellent books followed: Stefan Jarociński's Polish Music (1963), Ludwik Erhardt's Music in Poland (1975) and An Outline History of Polish Music (1979) edited by the late Tadeusz Ochlewski.
There have been many biographies written about Chopin and Paderewski in English, but as a rule, the general histories and textbooks on music had limited information about Polish composers to one sentence or not at all. Ludwik Erhardt states that the first breach was made by the fifth edition of Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians in 1954, whose nine volumes allotted a considerable amount of material on Polish music. Since then, the Larousse Encyclopedia of Music (English edition, 1971) has also provided an ample amount of information.
After World War II the main music publisher was the Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne (PWM). Many of the books published appeared with introductions or chapter summaries in English. Some smaller pamphlets were published in five languages. The governmental agency Interpress devoted itself to promoting various aspects of Polish culture in books issued in several languages (e.g. an excellent book on Szymanowski edited by Zdzisław Sierpiński).
Various institutions and societies also published books or series. Among them:
After the transformation of the Polish political system and the introduction of free market economy in 1989, PWM has reduced its output of serious music studies and monographs focussing instead on more profitable publications. The void was filled in by new, smaller and more efficient publishing houses, such as Musica Iagellonica, headed by Prof. Zygmunt Szwejkowski at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków (for their address see our list of Book Publishers. This publisher issues books in Polish; in 1995 its name became the title of a new scholary journal with articles about Polish music in English, Musica Iagellonica. Another new publishing house in Poland is the Sutkowski Edition in Warsaw, which embarked upon a project called Polish Music History Series (ed. Stefan Sutkowski) and consisting of scholarly monographs on various aspects of Polish musical life. These books are published in English.

- Warszawskie Towarzystwo Muzyczne (Warsaw Music Society);
- Polskie Towarzystwo Ludoznawcze (Polish Ethnographic Society) - 80 volumes of the Complete Works of the folklorist Oskar Kolberg;
