INSTRUMENTAL COMPETITIONS

Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Competition

The Henryk Wieniawski Music Society initiated this competition in 1935 in Warsaw and held every five years thereafter; in 1952, the competition was moved to Poznań. The next competition will be conducted in October, 2006. Past first prize winners included David Ojstrach (Soviet Union) and Ginette Neveu (France).

The competition is open to violinists of all nationalities up to the age of 30. It is divided into four stages. In the first stage the participants perform a work by Bach, a capriccio by Wieniawski and another one by a different composer, plus a movement from one of Mozart's concertos (with piano). The program of the second stage includes works by Wieniawski, Szymanowski and a contemporary composer. In the third stage the contestants choose a sonata from the list provided while the fourth stage consists of performing two concertos for violin and symphony orchestra, one by Wieniawski and one by another composer (Karlowicz, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Szymanowski, etc.).

There are six prizes (ranging from $3,000 to $20,000 before tax) and four distinctions awarded to those participants of Stage III who are not admitted to Stage IV ($2,000 each). For further information contact:
