CHOPIN PIANO
COMPETITIONS
One of the oldest competitions in the world. Initiated by Prof. Jerzy Zurawlew in 1927 and held every five years. The 13th competition took place in 1995; the first prize was not awarded, two second prize winners (Silver Medal plus $20,000) were Philippe Giusiano (France) and Alexei Sultanov (Russia). Special prizes for the best performances of polonaises, mazurkas and concertos were not awarded. The best Polish performer was Magdalena Lisak who won the sixth prize and $4,000. The next competition will take place in 2005. The competition is usually divided into four stages. In the first stage the contestants perform one nocturne and two etudes. Forty contestants appear in the second stage to perform one of the ballades, six consecutive preludes, a waltz and a polonaise. Fifteen contestants are admitted to the third stage; their program includes a cycle of mazurkas, and one sonata. In the final stage six contestants appear performing one of Chopin's piano concertos.

Fryderyk Chopin's National Pianist Competition (Warsaw)
National Scholarship Competition for Candidates of the 14th International Fryderyk Chopin Pianist Contest Held annually in February.
American National Chopin Piano Competition (Miami) The competition is held every five years to coincide with the major Chopin competition in Warsaw. The next one will take place in the year 2005. America's most outstanding young Chopin players are chosen to compete for over $90,000 in cash prizes, concert engagements, and the opportunity to represent the U.S. at the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland.

Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Piano Competition (New York) The competition takes place annually. For last year's winners see our Newsletter, May 2001. The first prize winner receives a scholarship of $2,500 for further piano study and invitations to perform at concerts, including the Chopin Festival in Duszniki-Zdroj. Second and third prizes are scholarships of $1,500 and $1,000 respectively. The age of the contestants is limited to between 16 and 22 years. For more information write to:
Kosciuszko Foundation Chicago Chapter Chopin Competition Winners are eligible to compete in the parent competition in New York. Prizes include round-trip air fare to New York plus cash (three prizes from $4,000 to $1,000). The three prize winners and the Honorable Mention winner will be eligible for the parent competition in New York. For more information contact:

Chopin International Competition of the Pacific Iinitiated in 1996, when the winner was 11-years old Sean Kennard of Aiea, Hawaii. He was presented with the gold Medal by His Serene Highness Prince Paul von Lobkowitz, the honorary chairman of the jury. The first prize includes three concerts in Poland, including a performance at Zelazowa Wola, Chopin's birthplace. For more information contact:
Chopin Piano Competition of the Chopin Society of Texas This competition is open to pianists of all nationalities born between October 4, 1977 and October 4, 1988. For information about this competition contact the Fryderyk Chopin Society of Texas.

Paderewski Youth Piano Competition (Paso Robles, CA) This competition is a part of the annual Paderewski Festival in Paso Robles, celebrating Paso's most famous former inhabitant, Ignacy Jan Paderewski. The contest is open to male and female piano students who are studying with an established piano teacher and reside within the following counties: San Luis Obispo, Monterey, Santa Barbara. Entrants compete in two groups: Juniors (age 10-14) and Seniors (age 15-18). Each finalist will receive a certificate. Prizes ranging from $200-$750 are awarded to the top three performers in each category. Winners also performa at the Paderewski Festival Concert in the Paso Robles Inn Ballroom and are eligible to participate in the educational exchange scholarship program that includes piano workshops, master classes, and performances in Poland. American Paderewski Piano Competition (Los Angeles) Open to pianists of any nationality between the ages of 16 and 27, this competition occurs every 3 years, to prepare pianists for the Paderewski Competition in Bydgoszcz, Poland (see below). The next edition will be held in 2010. Monetary prizes include a Grand Prize of $5,000.00 USD, 2nd Prize of $2,500.00 USD and 3rd Prize of $1,000.00 USD. Other Prizes include:

International Paderewski Piano Competition (Bydgoszcz, Poland) The Competition is open to pianists of all nationalities between the agest of 16 and 27. In order to allow participants to present their artistic personality, imagination and individuality, competitors are given free choice regarding the repertoire presented to the judges; however, selected repertoire must contain the works representing at least three different musical styles.  Milosz Magin Concours de Piano
(Paris) This competition is organized for three levels of piano skill: Elementary, Advanced and Concert Artists. The choice of repertoire includes Polish composers (F.Chopin, I.Paderewski, J.Zarembski, K.Szymanowski, M.Magin) and also French composers (C.Debussy,F.Poulenc, G.Chabrier, G.Fauré, M.Ravel). Prizes include €8,000, recording opportunities, and performances in France, Poland and Bulgaria. The Competition Office has a new address:
"Arthur Rubinstein in Memoriam" International Young Pianist Competition The competition has been held triennially since 1993 in Bydgoszcz. Required works include music by Chopin and Szymanowski.
