Poland's greatest composer after Chopin; regarded as the father of Polish contemporary music because of his influence on the younger generation of Polish composers. Composed more than 240 works, including operas, ballets, and instrumental pieces. Introduced elements from Oriental and Polish folk music into art music, credited with creating a new violin style. Superb orchestrator; his compositions create an unusual sound world of a great emotional intensity.
