This is a one-semester course, offered by the Department of Music History and Literature (MUHL), School of Music, and cross-listed in the curriculum of the Study of Women and Men in Society (SWMS), in both the major and minor programs. Students in the School of Music (at the undergraduate and graduate levels) may select this course as an elective, in accordance with the requirements of their programs. There are no pre-requisites for the course. 1. Availability:
The course explores the roles of women in various non-Western cultural traditions, highlights the contributions of women to various areas of music (composition, performance and teaching) in Europe and North America, and presents the music by an array of composers, from Hildegard of Bingen to Laurie Anderson. 2.
