Degrees offered: M.A., Ph.D.


The faculty brings rare resources to the teaching of historical musicology and the history of musical performance. Each is a highly regarded specialist, offering the student breadth and depth of preparation for advanced study in a chosen field. The department's graduates are members of the faculties of America's leading teaching and research institutions.

Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy

M.A. candidates must submit a statement of objectives, one or two representative historical or analytical term papers, a transcript of all undergraduate course work, three letters of recommendation and Graduate Record Examinations scores. Applicants for the Ph.D. should submit a statement of objectives, a copy of the master's thesis (or representative historical or analytical term papers, if no thesis was required for the master's degree), an unofficial copy of transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work, three letters of recommendation and Graduate Record Examinations scores.

The doctor of philosophy degree with a major in music is granted by the Graduate School. Candidates for the Ph.D. in music should contact the Graduate School. All courses applied toward the degree must be courses accepted by the Graduate School.

Master of Arts

Thirty units of course work, of which at least 18 must be chosen from MUHL courses numbered 500 or higher, MUTC 533ab or MUTC 534ab. At least eight units must be in history, language, literature or the arts other than music. A comprehensive examination, normally given in the last semester of course work, is required in lieu of a thesis.

Doctor of Philosophy

Historical Musicology Emphasis

In addition to the 30 units for the M.A. in music history and literature, a minimum of 26 units of course work is required plus 794ab Dissertation. Students should consult their guidance committees to devise appropriate courses of study.



Early Music Performance

Degrees offered: M.A., D.M.A.


Graduate Degrees

Audition

The audition must be performed on one or more historical instruments, and it should consist of representative selections for those media.

Master of Arts

The thesis will include the planning, research, preparation and leadership of a full-length program in early music. This practical work will be supported by a written essay that deals, as appropriate, with historical data sources, authentic performance practices and a stylistic assessment of the repertoire that is performed. In lieu of a comprehensive examination, candidates for the Early Music Performance Emphasis will be required to pass periodic reviews to demonstrate progress.

Doctor of Musical Arts

Performance Major - Early Music

It is the objective of the performance curriculum to combine high standards of performance with intellectual accomplishments appropriate to a university degree. Candidates electing this major must present at least four major public appearances: two solo recitals and two other appropriate appearances. The exact format, content and scheduling of the four appearances are the responsibility of the candidate's guidance committee. For additional information, please contact the department chair.
