STEVEN J. JOHNSTON, assistant professor in the Department of Government and International Relations at the University of South Florida, had his book, Encountering Tragedy – Rousseau and the Project of Democratic Order, published by the Cornell Uni-versity Press.

JEANNE SPARKS received a “Woman of Excellence” award from the Santa Maria (Calif.) Valley Women’s Net-work, as well as an award from People for Nonviolence, for her work on “Peace-week” activities. She is executive staff assistant for Fifth District Super-visor Tom Urbanske in the County of Santa Barbara a columnist for the Santa Maria Times.

THIERRY J. COUTURIER was nominated for an Emmy in 1999 in the category of Sounding Editing for a Series. He is supervising sound editor for The X-Files.

MARK JOHNSTONE MFA is the author of Contemporary Art in Southern California, published by Craftsman House, an overview of Southland galleries and contemporary art. He is a public art administrator in the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Depart-ment.

ELLEN BETH VAN BUSKIRK has filled the newly created position of vice of president of corporate communications at Cosmair Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of international cosmetics firm L ’Oreal Group, Paris. She will direct Cosmair’s external communications strategy.

JOHN D. VORGEAS was named vice president/general partner with Dominion Disposal Inc. of San Diego, Calif. He has been involved in the waste and recycling industry in the San Diego and Southern California area for the last 12 years. He lives in La Jolla, Calif.

MARK E. WOODALL was promoted to Commander and appointed executive officer of Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 59 at Naval Air Station Fort Worth, Texas. Woodall is a Selected Naval Reservist and a pilot for American Airlines in his civilian career. He and his wife and three children live in Carrolton, Texas.

GEORGE M. SHANNON was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal for meritorious service as training officer at NR Commander Fleet Activities Chinhae Headquarters, his previous command. He is currently the commanding officer of NR Fleet Support Training 2719 in Long Beach, Calif. In his civilian job as a systems engineer for the Boeing Co., Shannon is among a team of engineers developing a Kinetic Warhead for the Navy Theater Wide ballistic missile defense program.

PATRICK WILSON MM has been promoted to vice president of human resources in the Los Angeles office of Alfred Publishing Co. Inc. A specialist in publishing educational band works, Wilson is an active percussionist currently studying and performing Scottish bagpipe drumming and Brazilian percussion.

ORLANDO J. “O.J.” LEDON y CARTAYA MD ’89 accepted an appointment as medical director for Psychiatric and Chemical Dependency Services for Daniel Freeman Hospital in Marina del Rey, Calif. He serves as clinical faculty at UCLA and is associate editor for the American Journal of Psychiatry and the Creative Arts. Cartaya also released his second record album on the Rash record label last year under the alias “Max Batista.”

MITCHELL GOLDSTONE, president of 30 Minute Photos Etc. in Irvine, Calif., has united with Sabra R. Smith to give something back to the neighbors that surround USC by raising attention for the Institute of Scholar Training and Academic Tutorial (S.T.A.T.), a non-profit, education-based tutoring service in Los Angeles founded by Smith. Goldstone is promoting S.T.A.T. to his business contacts and is donating his services to help raise $200,000 for the annual program budget. S.T.A.T. relies on intense individual instruction to help inner-city, at-risk teens gain confidence in their abilities.

RICK HINSON received four 1999 Emmy nominations: sound editor on Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the Sound Editing for a Series category; sound editor for Houdini in the Sound Editing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special category; sound effects editor on The Sopranos in the Sound Editing for a Series category; and supervising sound editor on A Soldier’s Sweetheart in the Sound Editing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special category.

YOLANDA JACOBS MS received a President’s Achievement Award from the Aerospace Corp. for technical accomplishments associated with an important national security space program. She lives in Encino, Calif.

MARSHA A. JAMES has been elected to the board of director of Toastmasters International, a worldwide, nonprofit organization teaching public speaking and leadership skills. She is a financial systems specialist for Northrop Grumman Corp. and lives in Torrance, Calif.

JOHN S. MacINTOSH has been named partner in charge, South East Area, Management Assurance Service, by KPMG in Atlanta, Ga. He is married to SALLY MacINTOSH ’80; they are the parents of “future Trojan” Sarah.

STEVEN A. MINDEL JD was advanced from treasurer to second vice-president on the board of directors of the Los Angeles Free Clinic, where he has been a longtime supporter and volunteer. A Certified Family Law Specialist at Feinberg, Mindel & Kline, LLP, he assists on the clinic’s Legal Advisory Board and trains its volunteer attorneys on the family law protocols. Firm partner JEREMY KLINE JD ’85 is married to Mindel’s wife, making these two Trojan Family members not only law partners but brothers-in-law.

NEAL MORITZ MFA was nominated for an Emmy in 1999, for executive producing The Rat Pack, in the category of Made for TV Movie.

DAVE DESPER of CB Richard Ellis Inc. was promoted to senior vice president. He specializes in the leasing and sales of industrial and corporate headquarter facilities in the Orange County marketplace. Formerly a first vice president, Desper has been with the company since 1990. He resides in Coto de Caza, Calif., with his wife, son and daughter.

JOHN FLYNN has been named vice president and chief operating officer of the newly formed International Equity Group, an expansion of the investment management firm Loomis, Sayles & Co. L.P.

MICHAEL GOTTLIEB was promoted to partner at Ernst & Young LLP in its Orange County practice. A CPA in California, Gottlieb specializes in retail, distribution and manufacturing industries. He lives in Laguna Niguel with his wife and two children.

DAVID PEIM PhD has become a shareholder in the firm of La Follette, Johnson, De Haas Fesler & Ames. His areas of practice are professional liability, products liability, lender liability, employment law, real property law, business litigation and intellectual property.

JAYE TOELLNER is director of on-air at Discovery Channel’s Animal Planet, responsible for creative and strategic development for all the commercial elements for the channel. MATTHEW S. HANOVER has formed Hanover Group, a business development and marketing consultancy focused on internet start-ups. He utilizes his recent four-year experience as head of programming and marketing at Directv where, along with fellow alumnus RICHARD MELCOMBE ’77 of RichMel Productions, he was instrumental in setting the strategy for original programming for the nation’s number one satellite service.

SOHAIL MASOOD PharmD is president and CEO of Crescent Health Inc., a Cerritos, Calif.-based home infusion therapy and home health firm. In recent months, he has received several awards – including Entrepreneur of the Year for the Greater Los Angeles area by Ernst & Young and Man of the Year by Pakistan Frontline, a nationwide magazine for the Pakistani community – and been featured in both print and television media. JOHN OTTMAN was nominated for an Emmy in 1999 in the category of Music Composition for a Series. He composed the music for Fantasy Island.

BRANDON ROWE has been named vice president of sales and marketing for Merline Software Services in Richardson, Texas.

Lieutenant Colonel DAVID E. SNODGRASS MS of the U.S. Air Force was named a distinguished graduate of the National War College at a ceremony at Fort McNair, Washington, D.C., last June. After graduation, Snodgrass was assigned to the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon as Chief of the Joint Doctrine Branch.

GEOFFREY BAUM MA, a former C-SPAN staffer who currently serves as assistant vice president for marketing and public relations at Claremont McKenna College, has been named executive producer of C-SPAN’s Washington Journal, the national viewer call-in program. In 1993, Baum was the founding producer of C-SPAN Sunday Journal, which evolved into the program now known as Washington Journal.

BARBARA J. McLAUGHLIN MBA has been named vice president, sales, at Virtual Visits, an internet company in San Mateo, Calif., serving the golf and recreation industries. She is also an adjunct member of the University of Phoenix faculty.

JUDITH A. ADELIZZI left Discovery (Channel) Communications in Washington, D.C., and moved to San Diego, where she is director of marketing and promotions for Devlin Design TV Group. She is a third generation Trojan: her grandfather, Jim Lane, was president of the class of 1929, and her mother, Tommi Lane Adelizzi ’58, is past president of the Association of Trojan Leagues. Judith recently married U.S. Marine Corps Captain Sean Parker.

Recent newlyweds SUZIE DAVIS and JAMES (JAMIE) DAVENPORT III found a bagpipe player to play “Fight On” at their wedding reception. Jamie, who played outfield and first base for the baseball team while attending USC, is employed by MCI WorldCom as a major account executive. Suzie is the housing discrimination specialist for the Fair Housing Foundation of Long Beach and is responsible for conducting the investigations on cases prior to litigation.

DARRYN C. JAMES, a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, completed a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean and Arabian Gulf aboard the aircraft carrier USS Constellation. James’ ship participated in Operation Southern Watch in the Arabian Gulf, enforcing U.N. resolutions levied against Iraq after the 1991 Gulf War, patrolling the no-fly zone over Southern Iraq, and prohibiting the flow of contraband to and from Iraq.

KRISTI Q. McANDREWS-LITTON has been appointed director of Los Angeles Estate Auctions at Butterfield & Butterfield, an Ebay owned company, and is responsible for new acquisitions and monthly estate auctions. She is one of the youngest auctioneers at a major auction house and volunteers her time to charitable auction events throughout Southern California. She lives in the historic Miracle Mile District of Los Angeles with her husband, J. Christopher Litton.

STACIE I. STRONG MPW trialled for and won a place on the Cambridge University Women’s Boat Club development squad and competed for the university at the Great Britain National Rowing Championships last July in Nottingham, where the Cambridge squad beat the Oxford University squad in head-to-head competition. Strong was invited to join the CUWBC squad last fall, but declined in order to devote more time to her research. In addition to continuing to work on her PhD in law, she is supervising first-year students in torts and rowing for her college first boat.

YAR ROMAN CHAIKOVSKY is a patent attorney at the law firm of O’Melveny & Myers LLP in Los Angles. He and his wife, CAROLYN CANDICE CHOBOIAN ’92, a kindergarten teacher at Hermosa View Elementary School in Hermosa Beach, reside in Manhattan Beach.

ODD M. EBERSOLE left his position as associate counsel of SafeGuard Health Enterprises Inc. and joined CIGNA International, CIGNA Health Plans of California, as legal counsel within the legal and public affairs department. He continues to practice in the areas of general corporate law, health, regulatory and compliance, and transactions.

PETER KASTELAN MBA celebrated the one-year anniversary of his restaurant, Il Tiramisu, located in Sherman Oaks, Calif., which specializes in Northern Italian continental cuisine. His adventure in the restaurant business follows a 12-year technology career implementing digital television systems and information systems consulting. Kastelan welcomes all USC alumni to visit.

CHRIS PAGLIARO MS is a crisis administrator at George Washington Middle School in Alexandria, Va. He is also completing his administrative endorsement program at the University of Virginia and plans to soon begin work on his doctorate in education. CAROL A. McBRIDE MA, a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps, received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal while assigned to U.S. Pacific Command, Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii. She was responsible for revitalizing one of the Corps’ public affairs teams for the 21st century.

JACK ORMAN MFA, supervising producer of ER, was nominated for an Emmy in 1999 in the category of Drama Series.

KERRY PERDUE recently signed with the Beverly Hills talent and literary agency E. Thomas Bliss & Associates after completing her first novel and after studying with Los Angeles acting coach Janet Alhanti, whose students include Robert Downey Jr., Salma Hayek and Ann-Margaret. Perdue is currently a MPW student at USC working on a historical drama screenplay set in the 1920s.

PETER BOYER was appointed to hold the Smith Hobson Family Chair in Music at Claremont Graduate University. A multi-award winning composer, conductor and scholar, Boyer has been a visiting professor at CGU since 1996, teaching 20th-century music, American film music, and music technology.

LIV EISAMAN has been elevated to senior account executive at GCI Group, Grey Advertising’s international public relation arm, in the Los Angeles office.

JOUBIN MORTAZAVI co-founded Ragnarok Productions Inc., a film production company, with longtime partner and friend ELI FRANKEL ’95. With Mortazavi serving as producer and Frankel as director, the company produced its first film, 21, a coming-of-age comedy/drama about five college seniors who are reunited on the final weekend before college graduation by the death of an old mutual friend. They co-wrote the script for the film.

LENNY KRAYZELBURG set three world records in the backstroke at the Pan Pacific Championships last August. The swimmer won two gold medals in the meet, setting world records in both the 100- and 200-meter backstroke events. Then, in a special time trial in which he swam only against the clock, he set a third world mark in the 50-meter backstroke. United States Swimming named Krayzelburg U.S. Swimmer of the Year in 1999.
