A $1.3 MILLION GIFT from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation will fund the Western Knight Center for Specialized Journalism at USC’s Annenberg School for Communication.
The center will offer seminars aimed at educating mid-career journalists on topics of broad significance – such as the Pacific Rim, the environment, entertainment and immigration – that are rooted in the West. Operated jointly by USC and UC Berkeley, it will be similar to the successful Knight Center at the University of Maryland.

for the new center, Knight Foundation officials invited a select group of journalism schools in the Western United States to submit proposals. A joint plan by USC and UC Berkeley emerged as the best, drawing on the strengths of two established programs covering the spectrum of journalism education, said a Knight Foundation press release.
“USC and UC Berkeley, located in areas that symbolize the multicultural, high-tech America of the 21st century, look forward to learning from the Univer-sity of Maryland’s successful program,” said Loren Ghiglione, director of the School of Journalism at the Annenberg School for Communication. “Together we can train many more journalists and dramatically increase the number and range of subjects covered annually.”
