Edward P. Roski Jr. 62, a prominent businessman with a long history of community philanthropy and dedication to USC, is this years recipient of the universitys highest alumni honor, the Asa V. Call Achievement Award, to be presented at the 70th Alumni Awards Dinner March 2.
A USC trustee, Roski is president and CEO of Majestic Realty Co. one of Californias oldest and largest privately held real estate firms and part owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, the Los Angeles Kings and the Staples Center.
Ed Roski is a noted business and civic leader, and a person with a deep concern for this university and its mission, said USC president Steven B. Sample in announcing the award. We are proud to honor him with USCs top alumni award.
Roski has long been active in USC affairs. A USC trustee since March 2000, he sits on the development and business affairs committee of the board. In addition, he is a member of the Board of Visitors of the USC Marshall School of Business and a life member of Cardinal and Gold.
He gained public attention in 1996 when he and partner Phil Anschutz began negotiations with the city to build a sports and entertainment complex. The resulting $375 million Staples Center, which opened in October 1999, has been credited with helping to rejuvenate the downtown area.
Roski has long given his time to the city, serving on the boards of the Big Brothers of Greater Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Sports Council, the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles and the Natural History Museum, among others. He has received many awards and recognitions, including the Spirit of Los Angeles Award and the 1999 Heritage Award.
His wife, Gayle Garner Roski 62, is an accomplished painter who serves on the Board of Councilors of the USC School of Fine Arts, the arts and furnishings committee for the new Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles and the Chinatown Advisory Committee for Arts and Culture. They have three children, Patricia 86, Edward III and Katrina, and four grandchildren.
Established in 1932, the Asa V. Call Achievement Award is the highest award given to a USC alumnus. The award recognizes alumni who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the university and community by giving generously of their time, energy and leadership.
In addition to the Asa V. Call Achievement Award, three Alumni Merit awards and three Alumni Service awards will be presented this year.
Merit awards are given to individuals whose remarkable accomplishments speak well for the range and quality of a USC education. This years awardees are:
Yale Gieszl 65, senior advisor to Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc. As the companys former vice chairman, he was the highest ranking American in Toyota USA and a leading figure in the automotive industry. At USC, he is a Presidential Associate and a member of the Board of Councilors of the School of Policy, Planning and Development. He received a Distinguished Alumni Award from the USC Leventhal School of Accounting in 1993.
Phil R. Manning 45, MD 48 has been on the faculty at the Keck School of Medicine of USC since 1954 and is now the Paul Ingalls Hoagland Hastings Professor of Continuing Medical Education, associate dean for postgraduate affairs and associate vice president for health affairs. Nationally recognized for his pioneering leadership in the establishment of continuing medical education programs for physicians, he is also the author of the highly praised book, Medicine: Preserving the Passion.
Anugerah Pekerti PhD 85 is president of PPM Graduate School of Management, a management education school in Jakarta, Indonesia and chairman of World Vision Asia, a humanitarian organization dedicated to alleviating famine among Indonesian children. Under his direction, World Vision has grown into one of the most active humanitarian organizations in Indonesia, with more than 60,000 impoverished children in its care. A former member of the USC Alumni Association Board of Governors, he is also president of Alumni USC Indonesia.
Alumni Service Awards recognize outstanding volunteer efforts on behalf of the university. The energy, dedication and enthusiasm of each recipient epitomize the spirit of partnership that is key to USCs growth and leadership. This years awardees are:
Marvin A. Goux 56 spent 26 years as an assistant football coach at USC and 10 years as an assistant coach with the L.A. Rams. Considered the spirit of USC football for many years, he was instrumental in establishing the Trojan Club of the Desert and has been honored with Gouxs Gate, an entrance to the football practice field.
Ann Lipscomb Hill 71, MA 74 has a long history of leadership with the Trojan League of San Diego and the Association of Trojan Leagues, serving as its president in 1997-99. An attorney practicing in San Diego, she is also a member of the USC Alumni Association Board of Governors.
Fred Keenan 37 is a past president of Half-Century Trojans and is active in Skull and Dagger, Sigma Chi, Commerce Associates and Cardinal and Gold, among other organizations. He is a presidential member of USC Associates and has endowed a chair in finance at the USC Marshall School of Business.
