tanley P. Gold and his wife, Ilene, had been married only a few weeks when he entered the USC Law School in September 1964. “The people at USC were incredibly good to us,” says Gold, now president and chief executive officer of Shamrock Holdings, Inc., a major investment company. “They showed a personal interest that I believe is a hallmark of the USC experience.
“Professors and administrators helped me locate scholarship funds and part-time employment, and generally provided a very nurturing, supportive atmosphere.”
The Golds have maintained a close association with the university ever since. Stanley Gold joined the Board of Trustees in 1993, serving on the Finance and Academic Affairs committees, and is also a member of the Law School Board of Councilors. Ilene Gold is on the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences Board of Councilors and Campus Hillel.
“We each need to show appreciation for what others have given,” says Stanley. “I feel the best way to show that is to support the university so it can continue to provide that helping hand to new generations of young people.”
Prior to USC, Stanley attended the University of California, Berkeley and UCLA, graduating with a degree in political science from UCLA. He earned his juris doctorate from USC in 1967 and then embarked upon a “fascinating and illuminating” period, traveling to Great Britain to study at Cambridge University.
“Spending time abroad can have a tremendous impact on a student’s personal and intellectual development,” he says. “I believe it is beneficial for all students to get that broad perspective on the world as part of their education.”
In order to make the dream of overseas study available to more students, the Golds recently pledged $1 million to establish the Gold Family Trustee Scholar-ships, which will send two students overseas annually. The Golds made additional gifts to the School of Public Administration and the Law School last year.
At Shamrock Holdings, Stanley Gold oversees the day-to-day operations of the Burbank-based company owned by the Roy Disney family. Shamrock is a diversified investment company that, directly or through subsidiaries, operates numerous companies throughout the world. Prior to joining Shamrock, he was a managing partner of Gang, Tyre, Ramer & Brown, a prominent Los Angeles law firm.
During his career, he has also served as president of Shamrock Broadcasting, Inc.; president, then chairman of Central Soya Company, Inc.; and chairman of Enterra Corporation. He is currently a director of The Walt Disney Company, L.A. Gear, Inc. and Koor Industries Inc., Israel’s largest industrial company.
A native of Los Angeles, Stanley Gold chairs the board of governors of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. The Golds live in Beverly Hills and have two children, Charles (a recent USC MBA graduate) and Jennifer.
As for their ongoing support of USC, Stanley says, “The current administration is particularly adept at keeping its trustees informed and encouraging interaction with students and faculty. And there is a joy to the job. Seeing students graduate and the university grow in stature and wealth is a great reward. The truth is, we continue to get back as much as we give.”
