The Ultimate Trojan Family? The Arnolds and Wilcoxes are not only multi-generational Trojan families – they’re multi-generational families who have “multi”-merged with other USC families. For you Trojan genealogy buffs out there, hang with

the following: First there are the Arnolds. The first generation of USC alumni consists of sister and brother Nadine Arnold Foster ’44 and Daryl Arnold ’45. Daryl, who was later to become Ambassador to Singapore during the Reagan presidency, married Shirley Haymore ’46 (sadly, the couple died in a car accident Dec. 30, 1997). They, in turn, produced three Trojans, sons Larry Arnold ’71 and Gary Arnold ’73, JD ’76, and daught

The Intersection

er Ann Arnold Thompson ’75. Gary also married a Trojan, Mary Wilcox ’74; they are the parents of a third Trojan generation. So, in the line from Daryl Arnold, the Trojan family extends – at least thus far – to Jeffrey Arnold, who will graduate from USC next year, and Bonnie Arnold, a graduate student in the USC Annenberg School for Communication who is also set to complete her degree in 2001.
Daryl’s sister, Nadine Arnold Foster, meanwhile, has a few SCions of her own, comprising another three-generation branch. Her son, Tom Foster ’70, and daughter, Nancy Foster Bear ’73, are alums. Tom also married “into the family” when he and Debbie LaVigne ’72 exchanged vows. Their son, Mathew Foster, will graduate from USC in 2001.
The Wilcoxes have proven to be no less loyal, beginning with first-generation siblings Shari Wilcox Daynes ’47, C. Fred Wilcox ’48 and Joy Wilcox Cook ’49. (Three of their first cousins are also alumni: Hutch Eccles ’45, Raymond S. Wilcox ’48 and Richard Eccles ’50.) Five of physician Fred Wilcox’s children graduated from USC: Nancy Wilcox Lovell ’72, Mary Wilcox Arnold ’74, Linda Wilcox Sopo ’80, Mari Wilcox Gilbert ’81, MPA ’84, and C. Fred Wilcox IV ’83.
Of those five siblings, three have married and/or raised Trojans. Nancy and husband Fred Lovell ’68 are the parents of current USC senior Katie Lovell, and Gina Sirianni Wilcox ’85 is the wife of Fred Wilcox IV. And, of course, the sharper genealogists among you will have noticed that the Arnold and Wilcox families intersect in the marriage of Mary Wilcox and Gary Arnold.

The photographs above left and below provide an opportunity to put faces with the names of this Ultimate Trojan Family.
