Taiwan Couple Gives $500,000 to USC’sSchool of Engineering
RAYMOND SOONG, chairman of the Lite-on Group, one of Taiwan’s largest electronics conglomerates, and his wife, Feng-Ing Soong, have given $500,000 to the School of Engineering to help support the school’s Asia-Pacific Institute for Global Industrial Leadership, founded in 1995 to foster international technology cooperation and development, educational initiatives and industrial partnerships.
“With its multidisciplinary resources that integrate business methods, technology know-how and international perspectives, the Asia-Pacific Institute will help Chinese companies achieve global industrial leadership,” Raymond Soong said. “API serves an important role as a collaborative bridge between interested Asia-Pacific companies, universities and R&D institutions and their U.S. counterparts.”
Soong, an engineer, established the Lite-on Group in 1975. The conglomerate is composed of companies with interests in computer peripherals, semiconductors, telecommunications and financial investment. It operates more than three dozen factories and almost 30 branch offices in more than 20 countries.
“I’m delighted that Raymond and Feng-Ing Soong have chosen to support the Asia-Pacific Institute,” said Steven B. Sample, president of USC and chairman of the Association of Pacific Rim Univer-sities. “This gift will boost the institute’s efforts to link North American and Asian industry and enable the Pacific Rim region to assume an industrial leadership role in the 21st century.”
Leonard M. Silverman, dean of the school, concurred: “Raymond Soong is a true global leader in the electronics industry and a great friend of the school,” he said.
Soong is a member of the School of Engineering’s board of councilors. His son, Tom, attended the School of Engineering and his daughter, Katy, attended the USC Marshall School of Business.
