| Faculty Research The second major triumph of the past decade has been a substantial strengthening of USC's research mission. Sponsored research, which is almost entirely faculty driven, has nearly doubled over 10 years, to $325 million a year. USC now ranks ninth among all private universities in America in terms of the dollar volume of federal research support. Steven B. Sample, State of the University Address, Feb. 27, 2001 |

Another measure of academic strength of any university is the number of faculty who have been elected to membership in the three National Academies that are recognized by the Association of American Universities the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Science, and the Institute of Medicine. At USC that number has nearly doubled over the past 10 years, to a total of 39. Steven B. Sample, State of the University Address, Feb. 27, 2001 Faculty Quality No university can be better than the quality of its faculty. And in that respect USC ranks among the leading research universities in the country. UC president emeritus David Gardner, Decade of Distinction video, March 2001 A Community of Scholars USC has in fact built a faculty of extraordinary quality, one befitting a great research university. Our faculty are not simply teachers of the works of others, but active contributors to what is taught, thought and practiced throughout the world. For this reason, USC is one of a very small number of premier academic institutions in which research and teaching are inextricably intertwined, and on which the nation depends for a steady stream of new knowledge, art and technology. Steven B. Sample, USC Trojan Family Magazine, Winter 1995 A Nobel Cause For several years, USC officials and George Olahs colleagues at other schools have been calling his work Nobel-class. Nonetheless, the telephone call that announced his 1994 Nobel Prize for Chemistry was a shock when it actually arrived Oct. 12 at 6:30 a.m. Los Angeles Times, Nov. 8, 1994
