Albert Karagozian of Los Angeles retired from tax accounting in June 2002. He had worked as a solo practitioner with a specialty in the entertainment industry.

Russell E. Park was appointed an ambassador for the chief of the U.S. Army Reserve. He retired in 1996 after 30 years spent working for the federal government and in private business. He and his wife, Judith (Terkel) Park ’56, live in Coronado, Calif.

Conrad F. Newberry recently retired after a 51-year career in aerospace engineering. He is a professor emeritus at Cal Poly Pomona and the Naval Postgraduate School, and is also a fellow of the American Institute of Aerodynamics and Astronautics. He lives in Salinas, Calif.

David Pressey MS was appointed rector of St. George’s Anglican Church in Ventura, Calif. He is also the co-author, with Charles Bennett, of Ojai Valley’s Veterans Stories, which details the experiences of 33 male and female veterans from World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

Robert M. Isaac LLB was honored in April 2002 when the main terminal at Colorado Springs Airport was renamed the Robert M. Isaac Airport Terminal. He served as mayor of Colorado Springs for 22 years.

David J. Bellis MA, PhD ’77, chair of the public administration department at Cal State San Bernardino, is the author of Hotel Ritz – Comparing Mexican and U.S. Street Prostitutes: Factors in HIV/AIDS Transmission. The book explores ways to reduce the rate of HIV infection in street prostitutes and considers the connection between the heroin trade, prostitution and HIV. David C. Martin is design principal at the architectural firm AC Martin Partners, based in Los Angeles. The company won the 2002 American Architecture Award for two of its designs.


John McGrew EdD published his fourth book, the novel There Comes One Moment Once, which follows a high school principal and USC doctoral candidate who faces a race riot at his San Gabriel Valley high school in 1965. McGrew recently completed a 30-year career in education, which included a stint teaching in the USC overseas program in Asia.

Leonard R. Fuller was elected to the board of directors of the Investment Company of America. A former USC trustee, he is chairman of Fuller Consulting, a division of L&L Fuller Inc.

James F. Dimitrious MS ’71, MA ’73 was elected supreme president of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association for 2002-2003. He had previously served two terms as supreme vice president. He lives in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.


Claude Mark Reed MM, MPA ’81 donated several items to the USC Doheny Library to honor the Class of 2003: three historic photographs taken in Scotland and Wales, and an autographed collector’s edition of The Writer’s Journey by Christopher Vogler. He is chief librarian, acquisitions, at Doheny Library.

Gloria Ricci Lothrop PhD received the Order of Merit Award from the Republic of Italy for her research investigating Italians in the American West and California. She also recently received the Tom Owen History Memorial Award from the Los Angeles City Historical Society for her contributions to the field of Los Angeles history. She is the W.P. Whitsett Professor of History at Cal State Northridge.

Jeff Paris MS ’79, MS ’91, along with his wife, Noni (Galpert) Paris MS ’76, EdD ’79 (see below), recently moved to Arizona, where he opened a private practice in mental health counseling, specializing in employee assistance programming and individual, couple and family issues. The couple resides in Scottsdale.

Felix L. George recently celebrated 20 years of self-employment as an architect specializing in roofing and waterproofing consulting. He is based in San Diego, Calif.

Harvey Gobas MS ’75 is president of the Los Angeles section of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He began his ASCE career in 1971 as president of the ASCE student chapter at USC. He was also recently elected vice-president of the Southern California chapter of the American Public Works Association.

Alan D. Sargeant retired from the U.S. Navy in December 2002, having served in the submarine service and naval reserve. He is currently chief engineer and operating manager for Cubic Applications Inc. in San Diego, Calif.

Monique Hunter-Dennis, president of the USC Black Alumni Association and executive director of Food From the Hood, appeared on “Oprah” to receive $100,000 and a 2002 SUV from the Angel Network. Food From the Hood is a nonprofit organization that works to empower at-risk youth through the development of entrepreneurial employment.


George A. Haloulakos MBA ’81 published Dollar$ and Sense: A Workbook on the ABCs of Investments. He is the owner and operator of Spartan Research and Consulting Inc., based in Bellevue, Wash.

Mark P. Thompson serves as managing director at Newmark & Co. Real Estate Inc., based in New York. He
specializes in national strategic tenant representation.

Deborah P. Kolodji won second place at the World Haiku Club’s Global Haiku Tournament, sponsored by the Japan Times newspaper in Tokyo. Another of her haikus was part of photographer Peter Miller’s 2002 exhibit in Kamakura, Japan.

Cynthia Amador was appointed president and CEO of CHARO Community Development Corp., a nonprofit based in Los Angeles. She has been with the organization for 15 years, most recently serving as executive vice president.


Paul G. Barrow has joined California Home Financial in Redondo Beach, Calif., as a mortgage broker. Additionally, he is on the board for the South Bay Children’s Health Center and is a member of the Autism Society of America and USC Associates. Richard Berlin MFA was the 2002 winner of the International Videographers Award of Distinction. He is currently pioneering screenwriting courses online with Learning Tree University.

Gregory Gandrud was elected to a four-year term on the Carpinteria (Calif.) City Council in November 2002. He is currently president of Gandrud Financial Services Corp. and is also treasurer of the Santa Barbara County Republican Party.

Mark Stockwell MPA, MPL was appointed director of municipal research for PNC Advisors’ Municipal Investment Group in Philadelphia, Penn. He is responsible for reviewing the credit quality of municipal bonds invested in client portfolios.

Susan Frant EdD is the deputy director of the division of industrial and medical nuclear safety at the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, where she began working in 1982. She lives in Garrett Park, Md.

William F. Stryker has joined the intellectual property group in the San Diego office of Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison.

John Clendening MBA ’92 was recently appointed director of enterprise communications for EDS. In the newly created position, he is responsible for the company’s lines of business corporate communications, including industry analyst relations. He lives in Frisco, Texas.


Karen Koellner-Clark has been an assistant professor of middle childhood education at Georgia State University since 1998.

Stephen Fillet has rejoined the investment backing firm Roth Capital Partners as managing director of corporate finance in the firm’s Newport Beach, Calif., headquarters. Previously he was executive director of CIBC’s technology investment banking practice in Los Angeles.

Steve Mindel JD is managing partner of Feinberg, Mindel & Kline in Los Angeles. He is the firm’s lead family law attorney and heads the business and transactional department.

Mark Andrew Brudnak has been promoted to vice president of technology for MAK Wood Inc., based in Grafton, Wis. He also recently wrote a book on gastrointestinal bacteria, titled The Probiotic Solution.


Joseph Rosa III MD is the resident program director of the department of anesthesiology at UCLA, as well as the associate clinical O.R. coordinator and an associate clinical professor of anesthesiology. He lives in Tarzana with wife Lisa and daughter Christina Marie.

Stacie Strong MPW recently received her Ph.D. in law from the University of Cambridge in England. She teaches law at Exeter College, University of Oxford, and continues her research in jurisprudence and comparative constitutional law. Her first book will be published by LexisNexis Butterworths Tolley later this year.

Bill Duff was transferred to the economic section of the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, Japan, in August 2002. He previously served as the ambassador’s staff assistant at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, China.


Max Polyak is chairman and CEO of Pike Laboratories Inc., a pharmaceutical company based in Stroudsburg, Penn., that develops pharmaceuticals for the organ transplant field. He is also founder and president of the Poli Group, a private equity and real estate development firm based in Pennsylvania, New York and California.

Lawrence Tepper recently published his first novel, On To Plan B. He works as a commercial real estate agent and lives in Los Angeles with his wife and baby daughter.

W. Brent Brockermeyer recently started a real estate company with fellow Trojans Geoff Arrobio ’91 and Chris Maling ’88. Called Trojan Capital, the company specializes in growing wealth through real estate investments, focusing on acquisition and management of commercial income properties. Lorraine Leavitt EdD retired from the Fountain Valley School District after 32 years as a teacher, assistant principal and principal. She is currently an assistant professor in the School of Education at National University in Costa Mesa, Calif. She also assists the California School Leadership Academy and is president of the Association of California School Administrators in Orange County.

Anne Reyes Robbins has been appointed magistrate in the family relations division of the Allen Superior Court in Fort Wayne, Ind. She is a partner with the law firm Blume, Connelly, Jordan and Stucky LLP, where she concentrates exclusively on family law.

Do Huy Thinh MS, PhD ’96 was appointed director of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Training Center. He is also the dean of the School of Foreign Languages and director of the Center for Foreign Studies at Nong Lam University in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.


Robert Kurkjian MA ’00 recently accepted a commission as an officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He is assigned to the Naval Sea Systems Command for Expeditionary Warfare at the Washington, D.C., Navy yard.

Paul R. Chabot MPA works at the White House as a policy advisor on law enforcement, justice and drug control within the Office of National Drug Control Policy. He is also a reserve naval intelligence officer assigned to the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon, in the Defense Intelligence Agency. He is completing a doctorate in executive leadership with a dissertation emphasis on organizational resilience, studying public safety organizations in New York City pre- and post-9/11.
