›› FOOTBALL MOTHERS
Summer 2007
This formidable formation was two players short of a starting lineup, and its members didn’t quite duplicate the three-point stance, but mothers of USC’s football players had a ball as they clowned around on Bovard Field in 1934. The building in the background is Old College. Beginning in 1924 and continuing until at least 1940, parents of football players were honored at an annual banquet held in December. The Los Angeles Times reported that there were two dinners held in 1929. Varsity team fathers were feted in the Student Union, while the players’ mothers enjoyed similar honors in the women’s residence hall. |
