Far left, Austin Murray of St. Louis, Mo. participates in the orange race at a Fourth of July field day. The games helped melt the ice on the programs second day, as Summer Seminars students got settled in their dorms. Top left, a group of students huddle for a photo as they get better acquainted. Bottom left, students play a game called over-under at the Independence Day field day; laughing in the forground is Ian McHenry from Claremont, Calif., a student in the News in a New Media Universe seminar. As the weeks rolled by, Summer Seminars hosted several other casual social events on campus, including a dance, a karoake party, weekly movie nights in the dorms and a party for all summer birthdays. |

Far right, Mallory Piazzola from Diamond Bar, Calif., does barre exercises behind a USC football player. Students in the SummerDance seminar sometimes shared classes and rehearsals with undergraduates in the USC School of Theatres regular summer session offerings. |

| Far right, on a hike in Malibus Solstice Canyon, Dan Snooky Hill of Coconut Grove, Fla. and Annenberg School instructor Nate Brown make their way through tall grass en route to a series of waterfalls. Brown led about 30 students up the trail, stopping along the way to demonstrate versatile plants such as the yucca, a natural antidote to poison oak, and edible thistle. Top right, at the crest of the trail, Linda Trottier from San Bernardino, Calif., stops to cool her heels (and soak her socks) in the waterfall-fed pools. Others pick their way through a rocky ravine hoping to scale the falls. Other outings included trips to Disneyland and Magic Mountain, the Getty Center, a Dodgers game, Santa Monica Beach and 3rd Street Promenade. |
