79 RANDALL R. ADAMS received a service award from the Board of Commissioners of the Idaho State Bar in recognition of his service to the state bar. Only five such awards are presented each year. GEORGE A. HALOULAKOS MBA ’81 received a Certificate of Completion-Clergy With Lay Professions from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. He is a chartered financial analyst and the owner/operator of Spartan Research and Consulting, Inc., in Bellevue, Wash. 80 HARRISON A. HEUBLEIN received the Meritorious Service Medal and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal while assigned to Commander, Amphibious Squadron Five, homeported in San Diego, Calif. He is a commander in the U.S. Navy. GREG HOLFORD MFA ’82 is currently directing one of the largest theatrical productions in the world, entitled Fantasy of a Kingdom. The multi-million dollar spectacular, which is a cross between a Broadway production and a Vegas extravaganza, is set to open Dec. 15 on the exclusive resort island of Phuket, Thailand. MICHAEL C. MOREY MBA ’82 has been promoted to regional vice president of Electric Lightwage, a local exchange carrier based in Vancouver, Wash. He will be responsible for their Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento operations. Morey is also the president of USC’s Sacramento Alumni Club. ANTHONY MUNOZ, former USC and professional football star, was elected to the pro football Hall of Fame. His son, Michael, 17 years old and even bigger than his 6-foot-6-inch, 280-pound dad, made the presentation during ceremonies last August in Canton, Ohio. Munoz was an offensive tackle throughout his career, which included playing for the Trojans from 1976 to 1979. He was a first-round draft choice of the Cincinnati Bengals and appeared in two Super Bowls and 11 straight Pro Bowls. 81 ROBERT D. PARLET MS retired from active duty at the rank of captain after 27 years of service in the U.S. Navy. DAVID W. PICKARD III, AIA, received his JD degree from Southwestern University School of Law last May. A licensed architect and general contractor, he has been principal architect for a variety of building types at Pickard Architects and currently serves as vice-president of Pickard Construction in Whittier, Calif. LESLIE STEWART MM has been appointed music director of the Bay Youth Orchestra of Virginia. She is director of orchestral studies and adjunct professor of violin at Christopher Newport University. She is a life member of the USC Alumni Association. 82 H. WILLIAM DETTMER MS, senior partner at Goal Systems International in Sequim, Wash., has published his second book, Breaking the Constraints to World-Class Performance. His first book, in 1996, was Goldratt’s Theory of Constraints. Both are published by Quality Press. In the early 1990s Dettmer was also a part-time faculty member for the USC Institute of Safety and Systems Management. GERARD SMITH has compiled Celebrating Success: Inspiring Personal Letters on the Meaning of Success (Not-My-Type Communications), featuring more than 145 quotes, stories, poems and personal experiences from leaders in the arts, athletics, business, politics and science. Smith is the founder and executive director of the Institute for Successful Living in Newport Beach, Calif., and a featured speaker at conferences and seminars around the world. PERRY TARNOFSKY has been promoted to vice president, general counsel, at the Platinum Software Corporation in Irvine, Calif. He holds a JD from Southern Methodist University. MARK THOMSON delivered a paper dealing with his AstroMesh Deployable Reflector design at the International Symposium on Deployable Structures: Theory and Applications at Cambridge University in Sept. Thomson is an engineer for Astro Aerospace in Carpinteria, Calif., whose design for that company is utilized by Hughes Aircraft as the deployable reflector antenna in the communications satellite being prepared for cellular telephone systems throughout the world. EMMA L. WALTON EdD has been named 1998-99 president-elect of the National Science Teachers Association. She is a science education consultant and communications director for the Alaska Science Teachers Association. 83 JULIE HODGES was a member of the first group of candidates to receive the Certificate in Youth and Theology offered by Princeton Theological Seminary last April. A 1989 graduate of the seminary, Hodges is a substance abuse counselor and youth director in Centreville, Va. DIANE NACZI MBA has been appointed executive vice president and national sales manager for the Business and Entrepreneurial Services Group of Fleet Financial Group, a diversified financial services company headquartered in Boston, Mass. SAE-JIK PARK MEd has been appointed as head of the Korean organizing committee for the section of the 2002 World Cup Finals to be held in Korea. In 1986, Park was appointed chairman of the Olympic organizing committee SLOOC 1988. LYNNE (ANDERSEN) RANDOLPH is serving as deputy director of communications for California Governor Pete Wilson. Previously she served in the same capacity at the California Health and Welfare Agency and the Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs. 84 KATHERINE ANN CODEKAS received a JD degree from the Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego. She was a trustee scholar at the school. MALLORY PRESTLIEN-CANGIALOSI has been named producer, studio production, for the A&E Television Networks, including The History Channel, in New York. NATE THOMAS MFA made his feature film directing debut with East of Hope Street, a gritty, fact-based story of minority teenagers caught up in the child protection system in Los Angeles County. It won Best Feature Film at the 1998 New Orleans Urban Film & Video Festival and Best Urban Drama at the 1998 New York International Independent Film & Video Festival. Thomas is an assistant professor of film at California State University, Northridge. THOMAS E. WENDLER MBT ’88 will direct the Orange County office tax department for Singer Lewak Greenbaum & Goldstein LLP, certified public accountants and management consultants in Santa Ana, Calif. 85 SCOTT T. ANHALT MA, a commander in the U.S. Navy, completed a six-month deployment to the Arabian Gulf aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Russell. ROBERT BALLO is a director of photography shooting the openings and closings for the TBS series Dinner and A Movie and Movie Lounge, both produced through Broadcast Production Services in Burbank, Calif. Ballo also teaches film lighting in the USC School of Cinema-Television. STEPHEN W. FILLET has joined the corporate finance department of Cruttendon Roth as a vice president in the firm’s Irvine, Calif., headquarters. Fillet’s technology-industry focus includes software, systems, products and services. NANCY JACKSON MPW is the author of Photographers: History and Culture Through the Camera, published by Facts On File in New York. 86 JAMES W. BATES has become a member of the law firm of O’Rourke, Allan & Fong, LLP in Glendale, Calif. DAVE DESPER has been appointed first vice president of CB Richard Ellis, formerly CB Commercial. He specializes in the leasing and sale of industrial/R&D corporate headquarter facilities in the central Orange County marketplace. ROBERT A. DOLLAR AIA has joined HNTB Architecture as the national director of hospitality architecture. Based at the HNTB west division headquarters in Irvine, Calif., he will be responsible for leading the firm’s national hospitality marketing initiatives. COLLEEN JORDAN was promoted last year to vice president at PR Taylor Associates, a Palo Alto, Calif., investment management consulting firm. She is in charge of the marketing and sales efforts of the firm’s defined contribution group, focused on providing leading-edge 401(k) solutions primarily to the high-tech companies of the Silicon Valley. More recently, she announced her candidacy for city council in Redwood City, Calif. SAMUEL MAIO PhD has published a book of poetry, The Burning of Los Angeles (Thomas Jefferson University Press), which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in poetry. Many of the poems are set at USC and the surrounding neighborhoods. Maio is professor of English at San Jose State University. MICHAEL MAYHEW MFA ’89 edited Harvest Tales & Midnight Revels, published by Bald Mountain Books. The work is an anthology of more than 80 stories and poems written over a 10-year period especially by Mayhew’s guests (mostly other USC film school students) at annual Halloween parties. Mayhew is a writer, director and editor for film and television. ANTHONY TODD WATSON accepted a tenure-track position teaching chemistry at Kenyon College in Ohio. 87 FREDERICK M. FRANCE received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his service as engineering duty officer aboard the nuclear ballistic submarine USS Wyoming. He is a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. GINA LYNNE LaMONICA EdD is the director of PACE, the Program for Adult College Education, at Los Angeles Mission College, where she assists other colleges in developing PACE. Last May she was honored as one of Pepperdine University School of Education’s distinguished graduates. LYNN MALARZ EdD was appointed vice president for educational services by the National Associates of College and University Business Officers, a nonprofit professional organization representing chief administrative and financial officers at more than 2,100 colleges and universities across the nation. NICHOLAS ROGER was made a partner with the accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche. He lives in Grosse Point, Mich., with his wife, Valerie Huse Roger, also a CPA, and their daughter, Jacquelyn. DOUGLAS A. SCHENCK received his JD degree from Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles. While a student at Southwestern, he was named an alternate oral finalist in the 1996 Intramural Moot Court Competition and was named to Who’s Who Among American Law Students for 1996 and 1997. VANCE MS, a commander in the U.S. Navy, completed a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf as commanding officer with Fighter Squadron 11 aboard the aircraft carrier USS John C. BROWN has been elected the 40th president of the Palos Verdes Junior Women’s Club, a community organization raising funds for local grass roots philanthropies focusing on Women and Children in Crisis. U.S. Marine Master Sgt. STEPHEN C. DOUTT MS received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his service as coordinator with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station, in Iwakuni, Japan. LEONARD H. FRIEDMAN MPA, PhD ’91, has been promoted to the rank of associate professor of public health at Oregon State University in Corvallis. He also serves as the coordinator of health care administration programs at OSU. CAROLYN GRIFFITH MD was selected as the Distinguished Physician of the Year for the hospitals of Cottage Health System in Santa Barbara, Calif. MICHAEL B. MIZOGUCHI MD ’98 is in residency in family and community medicine at the University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. 90 WILLIAM J. ACEVES MA, JD, has joined the faculty of California Western Law School in San Diego as associate professor. He teaches comparative law, European union law, human rights law, foreign affairs and the Constitution, and a seminar on law and international relations. DOUG BRACKEN is owner and president of Ernest Wiemann Iron Works, a designer and fabricator of fine custom metalcraft in Tulsa, Okla. Bracken began working at the company in 1993 and purchased it from Wiemann last year. During its first year under Bracken’s ownership and management, Wiemann Iron Works won the industry’s highest award for outstanding craftsmanship in an international competition sponsored by the National Ornamental & Miscellaneous Metals Association. DAVID C. DODGE MBA passed the California Bar Exam and has formed a practice specializing in civil and criminal tax litigation in Irvine. Dodge is also a certified public accountant. MARGARET (PEGGY) POLINSKY PhD is director of research for Parents Anonymous, Inc., an international program dedicated to the prevention of child abuse that is headquartered in Claremont, Calif. U.S. Marine Maj. JOSEPH R. RIZZO MS completed a five-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard the ships of the USS Wasp Amphibious Ready Group. STACIE I. STRONG MPW has begun studies as a doctoral candidate in international and comparative law at the University of Cambridge, England. For the past four years she has worked as a general litigator at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP in New York. 91 CHRIS PATRICK MBA has been named vice president, acquisition integration, for Chatham Technologies, Inc., a Dallas, Texas-based manufacturer of custom integrated enclosures and systems for electronic and communications equipment. LEIGH-ANN SADDINGTON is an entertainment lawyer who enjoys a second career as a vocalist. She has performed under the name Leigh-Ann Spencer at many Orange County hotels and nightclubs as well several European clubs. 92 SCOTT MacPHERSON has been promoted to associate professor and granted tenure in the department of music at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. He teaches choral methods and conducting and is conductor of both the Trinity Choir and Chamber Singers. 93 W. BRENT BROCKERMEYER received his JD degree from Pepperdine Law School in 1996 and now works for the law firm of Garrard & Davis LLP in Santa Monica, Calif. He practices civil litigation, specializing in medical malpractice defense, insurance fraud and insurance defense. JOSEPH J. BUTKUS, a first lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps, recently participated in Exercise Cobra Gold ’98 while assigned to the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard the ships of the USS Belleau Wood Amphibious Ready Group. Cobra Gold is an annual joint-combined training exercise between U.S. and Royal Thai military forces. SALIL V. DESHPANDE was awarded an MD degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where he has been accepted into the internal medicine residency program. HENRY LIN, an ensign in the U.S. Navy, received his commission as a naval officer after completing Officer Candidate School at Naval Aviation Schools Command, Naval Air Station, in Pensacola, Fla. ANNA McKEOWN-LUGARO graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School and is in a residency program in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center. She is a former USC song leader and resident advisor. JEFFREY E. SUTTON MPA was named associate administrator for management systems and facilities at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in Washington, D.C. He has more than 27 years of federal service in the U.S. Air Force and NASA. DOUG YATES MBA joined the children’s broadcast network Fox Kids as vice president overseeing all domestic marketing and advertising activities. He was previously director of marketing and promotions at FX Networks. 94 CAREN (WALLEY) EDLER is the associate director of development at Santa Margarita (Calif.) Catholic High School. She recently completed her term as president of USC Town & Gown Junior Auxiliary of Orange County. THOMAS ANDREW HAIRE was hired as marketing writer at Wescom Credit Union in Pasadena, Calif., responsible for producing three monthly newsletters for different audiences, as well as other materials such as product brochures and press releases. Previously she was on the publicity department staff of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Navy Lt. j.g. JORDAN R. SAMORTIN recently visited Singapore while on a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific Ocean aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Cowpens. During the port visit he helped renovate a local school housing neglected and abused children. FRANCISCO URIBE was appointed public affairs director for the Antelope and San Fernando Valley service areas of GTE. Previous positions include working for the Clinton Administration as staff assistant to the U.S. Attorney General. 95 Navy Fireman RAYMOND I. ALCONCEL completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. WALT BECKER MFA is the author of Link, an adventure novel that blends romance, violence, technology and history, published by William Morrow. Becker is also a screenwriter. FELIPE CARIñO, JR. MBA accepted a position with FileTek as director, strategic new business development. While working at NCR/Teradata, Cariño received a patent and has six additional patent filings in object/relational and parallel database systems. VERNON EDLER IV is working at his family-owned aerospace company, Edler Industries, where he is sales manager. CAMERON GOWAN received her JD degree from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego. KOYAMA completed a six-month deployment to the Arabian Sea and Persian Gulf aboard the destroyer USS Ingersoll. DAVID MUCCI was hired by EMI-Capitol Music Special Markets to be their international licensing coordinator. He will assist the manager and director of international licensing in handling worldwide requests for music from the EMI Group’s catalog. JOSHUA R.
