Alumnus Ried Bridges Gives $1.8 Million to Law School

Building for the Future



(1) Popovich Hall
Construction of a three-story, 55,000-square-foot building to house the graduate programs of the USC Marshall School of Business. Classrooms will be wired and developed for video, audio and electronic data projection and transmission of local and distance teaching and learning.
Budget: $18.6 million.
Completion: summer 1999.

(2) Ralph and Goldy Lewis Hall
Construction of a three-story 34,000-square-foot building to house the new School of Policy, Planning and Development, with classrooms, faculty offices and academic support spaces.
Budget: $10.6 million.
Completion: summer 1999.


(3) New Entrance Loggias
Construction of 270-foot-long arched brick loggias flanking the promenade leading from the planned new entry on Exposition Boulevard to the front of the relocated Widney Alumni House.
Budget: $2.5 million.
Completion: summer 1999.


(4) Alfred Newman Recital Hall
Renovation of former Hancock Auditorium to improve acous-tics and appearance for musical performances. Stage enlarged to accommodate 40-member orchestra; seats upgraded; handicapped seating, greenroom, piano storage area and handicapped-accessible toilets; new heating and air-conditioning; foyer will receive new carpeting and lighting.
Project budget: $2.15 million.
Completion: fall 1998.

(5) Annenberg School for Communication
Phase 1 of a two- to three-year plan to upgrade the academic building. East wing renovated to improve building circulation, academic program function and systems. Offices, classrooms, restrooms added; high-tech infrastructure added; mechanical, electric systems replaced; finishes, furniture, lighting fixtures refurbished.
Phase 1 budget: $5 million.
Completion: winter 1998.

(6) Galen Athletic Center and Jess T. Hill Weight Room Addition
Construction of 5,400-square-foot dining hall behind Heritage Hall. Sports-bar-style dining hall, with full kitchen, will be training table for student athletes and open to university community for lunch and special events. Underground weight room addition houses weight-training equipment and an indoor 30-yard running track.
Budget: $2.75 million.
Completion: winter 1998.

(13) Katherine B. Loker Track and Field Stadium
In June, the USC benefactor donated $2 million to the athletic department for a 3,000-seat stadium on Cromwell Field. The facility will also house men’s and women’s track and field offices and locker rooms, concession stands and restrooms. Status: in planning stages.


(14) AMI-USC
Four-story buildling will house the School of Engineering’s biomedical engineering department and the new Alfred E. Mann Institute for Biomedical Engineering. Status: in planning stages; groundbreaking expected in 2001.


(15) Engineering Academic Center
An 84,000-square-foot building to house student services, student organizations and state-of-the-art multimedia classrooms for engineering undergraduates. Status: in planning stages; groundbreaking in late spring or summer 1999.


(7) Gwynn Wilson Student Union Remodeling
Development of the south end of the basement, formerly used by Pertusati Bookstore, for expanded Career Planning and Placement recruiting. Includes offices, interview rooms and student computer workstations. The area vacated by USC Pharmacy, which moved from the basement to the ground floor after USC Travel Service left, was converted to a classroom and conference area for larger Career Planning presentations.
Budget: $3.1 million. Completion: fall 1998.


(8)Bloom Walk Landscaping
New concrete and brick paving, fountains, benches and planting areas, including a new rose garden, grassy berm and jacaranda trees.
Budget: $400,000. Completion: fall 1998.


(9) Carl’s Jr.
Renovation and expansion: more cash registers and larger customer queuing area, updated patio seating.
Budget: $395,000. Completed Aug. 3, 1998.


(10) Exposition Boulevard Landscaping
Phase 1 of a two-phase project that is a partnership between USC and city, county and state agencies. Project will improve landscape, irrigation and hardscape in median between Vermont Avenue and future Gate 2 entrance to campus.
Budget: $300,000. Phase 1 completion: fall 1998.


(11) Howard Jones Field Extension
Expansion of football practice field space. Displaced tennis courts were replaced on the west side of Dedeaux Baseball Field in Parking Lot 1.
Budget: $800,000. Completion: fall 1998.


(12) Jesse A. Brewer Jr. Park.
A 2.5-acre park within Exposition Park with picnic areas, playground equipment and walkways. Visitors will see artwork etched into walkways, walls and benches designed to carry out the “World of Life” theme from the nearby California Science Center – a DNA molecule, for example, and tracks of animals native to Southern California.
Completion: October 1998.
