To RSVP, click on the individual workshop links below beginning Wednesday, September 14, at 9 a.m. Please note that you may not sign up or be on the waitlist for more than one workshop scheduled at the same time.

Learn pinhole photography, improve your drawing skills, salsa dance, have fun with improv, make ceramic figurines, explore fashion and architecture, create music with Pro Tools or play the guitar! These are just a few of the exciting activities that will be offered when USC’s world-class arts schools present workshops in art, architecture, cinematic arts, interactive media, music, theatre and dance. Get your hands dirty and experience the creativity and thrill of making art with USC’s distinguished faculty.

DIY Cinematography
Instructor: Gabriel Peters-Lazaro

This popular workshop will show participants how to get great shots with inexpensive video cameras and available light. Learn the fundamentals of digital cinematography and gain a tool-set of simple tricks and techniques you can use for real-world situations. This year’s workshop will also include green-screen compositing techniques.

Drawing with Drama Using Ink and Brush

Pinched Ceramic Figurines

Sketching without Fear
Instructor: Graeme Morland

Pick up a pencil or pen and discover that you can draw space and form with confidence. One of the best architectural delineators there is will demonstrate a mastery of precision and speed. Learn how to add a little color and depth to a sketch with a few extra strokes to make your work look amazingly complete. Beginners are encouraged to attend!

Talk. Look. Listen. Repeat: The Story/Image Pitch
Instructor: Stacy Patterson

We all have a story to tell, a thought to share and a personal connection to make. But in this fast-paced world, we often find ourselves with only moments to captivate our listeners and engage them to participate. This workshop will provide the tools you need to tell your story, albeit a very short story—one with three spoken sentences and three still images that you will choose and put together in the lab. Think of it as a multimedia elevator pitch.

It’s time to start clowning around. Clowning promotes courage, celebration and a love of the stage. This workshop will focus on the principles of great clowning in a practical context. Expect tomfoolery, laughter and a surprising opportunity to reveal your true self when wearing the famous red nose.

Creating Music with Pro Tools

Getting to Know the Guitar

Hip Hop Dance

Break it down! One of the most popular contemporary dances, Hip Hop combines groundbreaking music and self-expression with elements of graffiti art, rap music and breakdancing. This class will teach you the technique, movement, musical rhythm, tempo and phrasing required to develop the skills needed to perform this athletic urban dance.

Playing Pop Piano (Despite Years of Lessons)

You took lessons as a kid, but you still can’t play the pop music you love. This class will help by providing a guide to 12 bar blues and basic pop progressions and an introduction to the elementals of chord voicings and rhythms.

This is the “American Idol” opportunity for those of you who think you can sing! We will provide an accompanist who can read anything you throw at them. Participants will be judged and a winner will be announced. Several small ensembles will also sing for you, demonstrating another side of the music business.

Stomp

Can’t dance? No worries! Stomping is a combination of foot stomping and choreography with patting, slapping, clapping and playing rhythms on various items ranging from pie plates to hubcaps.

Drawing the Human Head and Face

Break down the human head and face into planes and basic shapes and examine the form from the inside out. Learn to measure and shade to create a portrait likeness.

Fashioning Architecture: Clothing the Body in Space
Instructor: Liz Falletta

Students will design and produce a simple garment (skirt, vest, coat or dress) using a single panel of material. Using each other as fit models, students will explore simple design operations (cut, fold, pleat, gather, fringe, tuck, wrinkle) to form the given abstract two-dimensional surface to the three-dimensional moving body. Garments will be modeled and photographed on the USC campus, positioned to explore formal connections between silhouette, placement of the body and the design of public space.

Gigapixel Photography

Learn how to create incredibly detailed photographs you don’t simply view, but explore. Using standard megapixel cameras and free software, attendees will learn the basics of framing, shooting, assembling and sharing a gigapixel image.

Pinhole Photography and Photograms

Playwriting

Everyone has stories and finding the right way to tell them is one of the joys and challenges of every writer. This workshop is loaded with exercises that will jar memories, poke around for emotions and allow participants the opportunity to explore the craft of dramatic writing in a safe and fun environment. Bring some paper, a pen, as well as your passion, and we will find the poetry in the everyday of our extraordinary lives.

Salsa Dancing

Be the hit at your next party. Salsa is an upbeat Latin dance that’s fun and easy to learn. A mix of Mambo with the exciting and quick turning patterns of the Hustle, this energetic Salsa workshop will teach you the basic movements required to heat up the dance floor. Improvisation and Theatre Games

Ever feel like making it up as you go along? Then come play some entertaining improv games with us! It’s playwriting on your feet and costuming your characters with your imagination. Soft Shoe

How do you tap dance without tap shoes? You do “soft shoe!” Learn basic tap steps that will help you put together a complete soft-shoe routine. This workshop is fun even if you have two left feet.
