14.4k is a bit too slow
Really interesting...I think I found a postcard of some kind.
Didn't have enough time or skill to get it in focus.
But I had a lot of fun...thanx.
Rad! That was fun! I'm going in again... :)
it was cooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
Hello,
I am currently working on the NERO Project in Oregon.
This robot operation somewhat resembles what we are
trying to accomplish. However, we want to put the
observation environment on real-time video over ATM.
At this point your robot operation is quite inspirational
to us. Thanks a lot.
Questions about our project may be directed to :

Noted locations of previously exposed Book, with Bust and
Greek letters. also located ashtray with dictionary definition of mosaic in it.
spent much time traversing at maximum altittude, wish there was a way to tile the viewOh well.
Great Sport!
That is really amazing.. Thank you for letting me
play with your robot..I only wish I could have more time
I have found part of a rist watch,a news paper and a ball pount pen.
I also found something that looks like an orange but I didn't have enough time to check it out
I really enjoyed operating the robot. This is a neat project, but
it was rather difficult to find the location. I did not discover
any really interesting objects.
That was fun. Thanks for the access to the robot.
** I found a scrap of paper with the dictionary definition of Mosaic on it.
Bye!
***Found a circular (metal) artifact with textured
surface near the head sculpture. May be a container l
lid.
Operated for 5 minutes 2/10/95. Removed one "blast" of air
from a partially covered ojbect. ***Upon complete excavation
the object is a bust of a human.
Well done!
*** I believe I discovered a watch (?)
Way cool!
Agh. I couldn't find anything! Oh well, it's 1:16AM Eastern time
so that will be my excuse. I'm about to try again though. To whoever
put this on the net: cool!
Dan
This is weird...
not knowing what I was really looking for/at it seems that
*** I uncovered an object resembling a man's shoe
Since my connection is *very* slow, I had only two air-blast opportunities. The second
*** uncovered a fork shaped object (not very clear). Tried to get closer but ran out of time.
Is this for real???
I'M SUCH AN ADDICT!
Egads, I can get addicted to just about anything.
Okay, now Cleo, you've played with this robot enough for today.
You are going to get off this robot page right now!
Hello out there !
This is really a outstanding project, but why not use
a more interesting area ?
My e-mail is by the way martin.gumucio@mcu.uu.se
..
Thank you !
martin
Too quick!
But way cool...
*** There is a large mask at 511,410,170 ... and there's some
stuff around the right corner (say, 937,338).
This is absolutly great!
Hmm, I saw something interesting but didn't have time to jot
down the coordinates. I will try again.
Well, there is an obvious empty match box directly "above"
white cylindrical object. I know that the left-most end of
the white object is at x=213, y=408. I cannot at this time
indicate exact coordinates for the right-most end, as my
time ran out yet again. I believe that the white object
may be a candle. I blew two puffs of air at the left end
in an attempt to discover a wick. I did not. I will next
attempt to uncover the right-most end with a couple puffs
in a row, to see if there is a wick.
There is some sort of white tubular object
which runs from left to right. I cannot tell the coordinates
which define its whole length, but I can say that at the coordinates
x= 246, y=411, you will be over a part of it.
*** Well, I found a watch..
thats about it.. will try again in a few..
great server!
*** The artifact was a polygonal, probably hexagonal.
***It seemed to be under glass!
***So could it possibly be a transformer for the robot arm?...
Great addition to the net!
Wicked idea...
I have some trouble seeing whats happening,
(PC-Windows 800x600 256 Colors), but I suppose that I cant
have it all.
Otherwise it works fine.
- Keep it up !
-Frank
Please don't interrupt my session if the queue is empty.
TY
Interesting. But I need more practice ! :^)
I saw this project on one of those news programs. I'm not sure if it was "Good Morning America" or something like that.
I only caught part of the show and I wansn't sure what the project was all about.
Thanks for the interesting experience!
***pipe & card - couldn't clear the card to read it in the
allocated.
This is pretty amazing. Perhaps a future feature could be
the ability to pickup and drop objects?
I thought this was quite interesting. I am still confused, though,
as to whether this is a real physical device that I am in
fact controlling, or whether you are using canned images somehow.
I tend to believe that you guys actually set up a thing,
though, as it is pretty convincing. Some of the sand looks
like that vermiculite stuff that people use in their flower
pots.
Simply amazing.
*** I did find some big, round, dark object.
*** I run out of time before I could decide what it was
Top Notch !!
Is the robot direct wired or via a wireless connection ??
Cool idea ! I want one of my own. On Mars. In color. Mobile.
I want it now!
*** uncovered metallic looking slim tapered object at x121y314, does not look like it was naturally formed.
Thanks for the fun!
people need more time because even if you
have a fast modem it takes forever and you can't do any
thing but its still cool!
*** A box of Diamond safety matches -- too bad we can't
strike one ;->.
Very interesting project -- more evidence of the almost
unlimited potential that has come out of the HTTP effort
and was completely unanticipated. I'll be back for sure!

The robot video camera is a little hard to follow...
Very innovative and fun to use! Good job!
Cool stuff! I found a ***NASA logo, what looked like
a *** plastic bracelet, and a ***description of turquoise jewelry.
More time would be nice, but you've got a whole world of people
to share this with. Excellent Site! I'll be back!
Very Cool!
Thanx!
Neat!, Is this real? Or is it some big bitmap I am looking at.
Cheerio!
Your robot is pretty cool, but how do I know its real and not just a
simulation? Also are there any manipulators for the robot other
than the blast of air? You should let the time limit be longer
if there is no one waiting in the queue. **What is the writing
at the very left lower corner of the field. The writing was too
fuzzy to make out, and I ran out of time. Other than that I think
its neat what you guys are doing.
Its, really nifty. I would like to see more then
one command at a time tho. What is the writing
on the bottom? Its not newspaper.. To Quote one part
"OBSIDUIM was used for knife blades because of the
rock's sharps edges." Where did that come from? :_)
In order to optimize the time allowed.. I would recommend changing the interface to accept multiple commands. ie: I want move here, lower the arm and shoot a burst of air.
A good use of the web for science.
had to try it again... five minutes is just to short with a slow connection
***found something big and black as rectangular... look from the shot like something out of 2001
It was great. Too bad I got a call 1/2 way through
***found the watch
Interesting! One of the more creative things I have
discovered on the net.
Craig...
This was great! If i only had more time.***by the way where did ther NASA
emlblem come from?
One of the coolest things on the Web. I will tell my friends.
The rate that images are returned limited me to about 10 actions
or less in my 5 minutes, hardly enough time to find an artifact
and do anything with it. I found and unearthed the ***matchbox,
and was about to try to blow some sand into it, but ran out
of time.
Great though. Thanks! Mike Blanpied
*** found a picture of a human head (bald) with arabic writing on it (?)
Is this robot for real?
--S
Very interesting, I'll be back again. I think we've stumbled
upon a junkyard or a time capsule (the contents of which
have been scattered around).
Veddy interesting (but NOT stupid).
Makes me wanna up from 14.4 to 28.8....
A fascinating exercise! Additionally, it is amazing
how closely the soil composites in that quadrant
resemble packing peanuts! That alone is a startling
discovery!
THIS IS VERY INTERESTING. I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS
ON THE NET BEFORE. I WAS HAVING PROBLEMS HOWEVER, PICKING ANYTHIN
UP..? THANKYOU AND YOU WILL SEE ME AGAIN.
*** Looks like a bible is in front of me.
*** Just moved over to the right of it and looks
*** Like I have found a pen?
*** I am not sure what I found, but I guess it could have been a mirror.
This is certainly an interesting project. When can I use the Lunar/Mars
version.
Great Fun
Joules
The air nozzle seems to be out of order or what..?
*** Nope, that wasn't a tankard, it was a wristwatch
*** Got a photo with someone's face with what looked like
*** Hebrew on the forehead too. And started to excavate
*** something wheel-shaped.
Hey, I _like_ this site!
Seriously neat! Think I'll have another go, if there's
no queue.
*** Crayfish
*** Something that looked like a tankard
***Now a sextant?? Really strange objects around...Well,
let's stop for the moment...I really enjoyed that and sure
will inform people around here about this...
***Something like a tray, a seahorse, an apple(?), a piece
of paper regarding jewellery, something written NASA on it,
a pen....These obviously were not achieved in one go...It
took about 40 min...(Yeah, there weren't much people around
to play with this magnificient thing and here 5 min is
enough for only two or three snapshots!)
Nice tour over the exhibition site. I think I discovered
something really interesting stuff there... Why dont put
some wheels on the robot to and send him off downtown!
who on earth puts a newspaper under the dirt?
but hey what else would be under there?
*** Newspaper and some kind of tool found
Hmmm. A second try is needed!
Interesting "exhibit".
I had problems with the interface. Every couple of clicks or so,
the control "panel" would become a small icon. (?)
As to what it felt like, it seemed to be more of an interface
where some of the positions, possibilites, and outcomes
have been digitized and sent to the operator.
Why do I say that?
The difference between the image before the air burst,
and after it, was too great. It lacked continuity.
Also a small movement on the control panel/screen would
completely change the position and it was hard to find an
object agai....
***I did find a "Freebie" ad or bag...
*** Their is a box of matches situated at X:284, Y:453
obviously they belong to the good doctor who died of lung cancer
***the round black object could be a film reel....
***Hard to confirm last observation, Mabey a
pen cap?
***Not much luck, started to find what looked
to be a snub nosed bullet for a hand gun, mabey.
*** I found a box of saftey matches and some type of
plastic spider.
This is really cool!
*** I found something with writing on it at 568,296 but will
need to check it out further to determine what it is!
This is a cool system!
This is excellent. What an innovative way to use the net.
I can see the applications that this can provide.
Thank you for the opportunity.
Wow!...That was cool...I had heard of controlling things over the net but this was certainly different than what I pictured...too bad I didn't find anything :)
KD
Thanks for putting this up on the 'net...
Couldn't identify much on this first trip,
but I'll be back...
***Found a watch at 426,487 (?) and something right next to
it that resembled a crayfish or something
This is a very interesting project. I look forward to
using this system again.
Didn't find anything interesting, but was fascinated by the
interface. Will be interested to find out more about the
methods used to process remote commands.
Fascinating!!!
David Lilly
Interesting ***found what appeared to be a campus newspaper,
cute guys.....
Pretty interesting and unique demonstration. I've not seen
anything like it. I didn't find anything, but that seems
to be mostly because the field of view is so narrow with
respect to the work-envelope. Maybe next time.
BT
Tja, Leute, das war mal wieder viel zu kurz.
Und tschuess!
This is really very exciting, I can think of a million applications for such
a remote method of control once it is perfected.
*** I discovered something resembeling a scroll with barely
legible writings on it.
excellent SIMULATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Interesting exercize in remote sensing and operation. Please
tell me (us) more about this technology, and it's possible
applications. I would like to read more about this machine,
and learn of other such experiments available through Internet.
Thank you.

It was fascinating to operate the robot. I will defenitly return to explore all the options of your site. It is hardly to believe that yhe robot is controlled in real time!
OOh cool,
How about some real exploration now?
Undersea etc?
Thanks!
*** I discovered a watch. There was a centipede sticking
halfway out of the dirt under the band of the watch but
I think it was dead because when I blew air at it, it
didn't move.
This is really neat!
*** Found what looked like a shallow bowl towards the end of my session.
Really cool! Looks like a cheap watch in there today!
Good idea keep it up!
Dean
The object that I found looks like a watch with out a band
A really innovative idea. I didn't actually
discover anything, but must congratulate all
concerned on both the concept and the interface.
Keep up the good work.
I'm having the best time. Found too much stuff uncovered by other people mostly in one corner! Maybe it's time to spread the rocks again? How about the grippers?!?!
Paul Timon
greetings from Ireland.
I have observed a major scientific breakthrough with your
www-controlled manipulator. It seems it may be possible
to move small stones with compressed air.
Finished uncovering the *** chrysocolla sample.
Looked a little at the mirror, and then some kind of
classified adds? (Listing apartments and Art museums.)
Moving to a color WWW browser. BW is too hard to see. :)
Thank you. No objects were found but nevertheless ...

Neat stuff. Your robot is fast. I'll be back.
***Found the definition of "Mosaic".
Great and innovative use of the 'net. I must
visit again to check out new features, as I'm
sure they're being planned! Keep up the good
work...
Fantastic job! This site is a blast. Thank you for sharing. I found a picture of something???
This is the first time I try to use this robot.
I have discovered nothing but I will try again !
Bye.
Get a faster net connection. :-)
Oh, and could we have some human targets and a laser? ;-)

already uncovered
*** in addition, i noted what appeared to be a piece
of paper, saying something like "[cer?]ise was

this most *certainly* beats the usual run-of-the-mill
web site--which is to say a hotlist of other people's
hotlists of other hotlists.
one word, in closing.
YOW!
Controlling a robot arm 10000 km away was really fascinating
I wish a had more bandwith to spare controlling the remote excavtor
It feels great! I didn't discover anything (except for something
that looked like a piece of wire??) but I'll be back. Great idea!
*** a plastic pot for flowers ?
Impressive project !
Nice little robot you have there!
***How thoroughly strange. Near the bottom-left corner is
a snippet from what looks to be the L.A. Weekly. Lists
information about Museum of Contemporary Art, African-American
Museum, and Kandinsky exhibit. Note (213) area code & date
reference to Aug. 12 of an unspecified year.
Very nice! It would be nicer to be able to pick up objects
and move them around :-)
Thank You!
Sergio Ferraro, Italy.
I think that this technology is incredible...
i just wish that you had a little more time in the
driver's seat.
thank you

Perhaps the image should be interlaced so you have an idea
of what the image will look like and where the buttons are.
It takes about one minute to click on a button and receive
a full image cycle from Australia (connected at 14.4)
Hope this helps - great concept ;)
Adam
Cool! My first time.
***pipe, lamp?, card
***Their were a picture of a face and a statue on the ground.
The head of the statue seem to be broken. The statue is
made of some type of metal, maybe gold.
***Depressing. The only object I found that hadn't been uncovered already was stuck under the belt.
OBJECTS DISCOVERED
-A BOX OF MATCHES
-A PIECE OF PAPER WITH SOME WORDS

DIDN'T NOTICE THE EFFECT OF THE AIR ON THE OBJECTS
CONGRATULATIONS!!
AH!! That was much better.. *** what looked like a squid shapped thang *** black cord, looked like
what holds glasses around neck when not in use *** looked like 22 caliber (or so) shell casing..
Thank you! THIS is GREAT! I think 5 mins is a fair time, since you can get back into the
queue and wait for another turn.. :)
Interesting - a little slow over my SLIP link, though.
Of course, I ran out of time just as I was about to uncover
something interesting.
*** Much more exciting than driving my stealth.
*** I found out the message saying "Salt is prizesd for ..."
*** Don't quite remember though.
*** I wish I can operate longer next time.
Greetings!
This is the 2nd time I have tried to operate the probe. This time I could not move the camera
away from the sand and the blower was not working.. *** I did see an object that was cylindrical
and black. It was not very long. Since I could not move the camera back, I had to track it by
clicking on the object until I came to the other end of it.
This is very exciting! I wish I could use it when it is fully functional! I will be back! It
is a wonderful experience to have the opertunity to manipulate an environment thousands of miles
away, via computer!
There is a small newspaper clipping in the far left corner of the grid.
***Found a wristwatch, but couldn't tell if it was moving.
Great interface!
Very cool idea. It gives you a feeling of actually "being
there". It was hard to control though.. I should go back
and read the docs.. Maybe you could have a feature that
would allow one to download an MPEG of what they did during
their 5 minutes. I think I shall visit this site again..
Matt
I have to admit I was a bit nervous this first time,
and there were also some communication problems
(I got this cracked image symbol back a few times).
***Well, I found a box with dimonds - didnīt I. Not bad
for a beginner. Iīll be back!
***great fun again, I don't know what I was looking at.
*** worked on uncovering the object only partly uncovered the last time
*** It is large and possibly rectangular with rounded corners

But difficult to find something.
I'll come back when I can.
found: a small globe depicting the earth, a wristwwatch,.
and a box of matches
I noticed the paper that had some article on an 'experimental artist' -- what's up with that? Is this real or a sim?
Thanks for a pleasant diversion. Wish I wasn't dial-up!
Very interesting and thanks for the chance to try it. Nothing interesting found though :-(
Still, maybe next time!
What a concept. This will change the way we work.
Imagine the autoclub using a tool like this
to change a flat-tire.
Seriously, it really is a fascinating concept
and well executed to boot.
Thanks
We found a mirror on x886 y361 z170. Good Fun.
*** At 951x341 Note dealing with Turquise... possible ball point pen increasing X
*** At 921x281 We have evidence of knowledge of Mosaic...
Pretty Cool. I wil have to try it from work with a faster
connection.
I'm brand new to the net; nonetheless, this concept is pretty interesting. It would be nice if only the image was redrawn and not the entire page........I don't know if that's possible.
Nice work guys !
It was fun, but what was the point. Also what real life
applications is this sort of thing going to have.
Thanks for setting it up so wisely.

***As my friend Brad and I were trying to negotiate the arm,
we were keenly aware of what we were doing. That is, we were
moving a piece of equipment well removed from us. We're in
my residence room here at the University of Alberta connected
by remote server to the U which in turn is connected to the
USC host and ultimately to the robot arm. At least, that's
what we been led to believe. Whether true or not, it seems
real. We've accessed another part of the world, had consequence
(we move dirt!) and all from this remote terminal.
We were discussing the implications while operating the arm.
The possibilities of moving exploratory units across the
Antarctic plains...home surveillance...laboratory dissections
...or better, a remote camera linked by satellite on the moon's
surface! With this kind of educational potential, the world
becomes classroom for our children.
This is a fuckin' amazing project. The HTML coding itself
was interactive, complete and incredibly user friendly.
Our many thanks. Danke!
This was very interesting.
Neat! First time I've used this...
*** found something like a dog license tag.

Thanks very much! I heard about this project in a Newsweek article months ago, and my college just got Mosaic. This is the first thing I've ever used on the World Wide Web, and I really enjoyed it.

Keep up the good work, folks! This is what makes the net
really interesting!

20 seconds an image is a real killer. I also find the restriction that you can only fire the air pulse while zoomed in rather arbitary. Even if there is a technical reason for it, surely the arm could zoom in, pulse, zoom out, send me the image. Just a thought.
Oh, another thing - it would be fun to see the "Sand pit" as a whole from time to time (I know this would destroy the illusion slightly... 8-). There seem to be large number of uncovered objects at any instance in time.
I'm impressed. Now I just wish there was one closer to me on the net - I spent most of the time waiting for the images to download! 8-)
It probably needs the ability to enter absolute co-ordinates - so you can come back to something you were exploring later.

It occurs to me that the interface might work a little more
quickly if the buttons for the air burst and the altitude
adjustment were moved to the top of the display window.
This would allow the operator to move the arm up and down
and hit the air without having to wait for the entire
window to redraw.
Just a thought.

Very much enjoyed this, will have to bring some new

on how the Internet can be used.

*** We found a spoon handle, a newspaper ad for a battery, and a ball bearing.

A little slow over SLIP (ouch!) but fascinating nonetheless.
I do agree, a reference indicating the length and width in
units of the camera view field would be helpful!
*** Didn't find much due to limited time, and what I did

Very innovative.
A photograph of a circular object with strange symbols
incised on it...almost like Klingon or Hebrew letters.
Fascinating, Captain.
Smithsonian Seed packet seems to have disappeared from
the previous site!!
Mysterious forces at work. Could it be in a hanger on
a secret Air Force Base?
*** Uncovered more of "Survivalist special
long life magnesium battery". Seems it is built for military
communications equipment. :-)
Internet response is so slow that 5 minutes gives only 5 actions, this will probably get better out of student term time
*** upon further investigation, I determined that the object at X333,Y454 is a matchbox.
*** The brand name is "Diamond".
*** it is partially open, but apparently empty (now that I've blown all the dust and rocks out of it.
First time at bat....
*** found what appears to be a sign with the word "diamond" written on it.
No gold found. BTW, have you got rockets or cannons connected?
Much more fun -- I mean effective
Some sort of weird gasket thingy at 760,404.
The interface has improved since I last used the robot
before Christmas vacation.
Well I was just beginning to uncover something and I ran
out of time. I'll be back.
Easily the best interactive machine on the web!
*** I found some type of lettering on a stamp-type of item
with the words "FRIGOR"? and something resembling coca-cola
but it wasn't coca-cola.
The robot arm is surprisingly responsive.
***Uncovered part of paper item with word
"Smithsonian" on bottom. Picture seems to
contain a human neck...possibly attached
to a head!!!

I was very impressed with this. It is very simple,
yet must have been extremely difficult to set up.
This is great.
***It looked like I uncovered a corner of a book.
Interesting approach to robotics in general. It is very
cool to sit here in Central Florida and operate the
robot in Calfornia. However, it is sort of slow with
response and a little hard to control. But all in all, it
is a good thing and I shall return some other time to
continue exploring.
Ron :)
Really cool site that you have here.
***I found this can of basil. What was on this site here in Nevada?
Why is there all of this stuff that looks like it belongs in a
home here anyway?
It was neat. That's the only way I can describe being able
to control a robot that's 2000+ miles away. . .
***SURVIVALIST SPECIALIST MAGNESIUM BATTERY is what it said.
i deiscovered it :) its great now i am gonna go discover

***there was this piece of paper i found it was like

what it said but i could only read the bottom half. I
jotted down the co-ordinates i'm gonna go back and dig some
more. ~\/~
Very cool, unfortunately a little to slow to use over a modem connection, but when I get back to our PC lab you can bet I'll log on via Ethernet so I can enjoy it more!
Excellent piece of engineering coupled with a wonderful web interface.
Sure to win the Most Technical Award for the WWW 1995
Keep up the good work.
I seem to find a magnesium battery of some sort (or maybe just a
piece of paper?) at location (288,368). It's so big you
can't miss it.
Too bad the screen update is kind of slow. It probably a good simulator
if we ever use a similar remote system in Mars, or even for the Moon.
Norman Wong
great experience,
not yet fast enough for image guide surgery, but ....
Ran my session from a Sparc 5 using Netscape.
2 sec delays between refreshes (but then we have
a thin and busy bitpipe to the internet).
Overall, it went well.
My personal rating: UNBELEIVABLY COOL!
Lots of fun !!!!!
Add some more stuff to the field of view.
***Unidentified metal object at 900,400
Fantastic project!
Operating from a 486 DX/25 using Netscape seemed slow
in the 5 minutes, performed only 8-12 operations. What
compression algorithm is used for the image transfer?
This is really cool !
Wow, I can operate a robot at distance !
I'm gonna try it again.
Thanks guys !
keep up that good work
Bas Vermeulen , Holland Haagse Hoge School
It is fun to play with it.
Only a little more distant viewing of the playground
will be appriciated.
was it on the moon or???
but funny!!!!
Good Fun, difficult to get accurate movement using the
point and click interface though.
This is a really excellent demo of what can be accomplished
through the 'net. It is definitely one the most interesting
places I visited on the internet. Thank you very much for
allowing me to access it.
*** Discovered a newspaper! Looked like the Chicago Reader,
by the fonts.
Just want to say this is one of the best experiences I've had
on the Web. Keep it up...
***I found something in the lower right corner that resembles a
bracelet. I'll be back to check it out.
Cool, Lots of Fun, Just like being there!
Thanks for the ride.
*** Couldn't tell what the shiny object in the bottom right corner was.
*** Fun and cool.
*** The robot did not seem to track according to the interface.
*** Did not accept prior established passwords.
This was wonderful! This is what it must feel like to
operate a robot on mars. I found *** matches and *** a
battery. Keep up the good work.
*** I found an ancient power storage device! (a battery)
I think this is a wonderful exercise in managing remote
computers. As an example to my class about space exploration
robotics, this will make a dry subject a little more
fun!
Thanks
Jonathan Hawes
Slow link (but, if I try to drive from Sweden...) :-)
I discover nothing , the previous operator
had dug himself in some gloomy,
dull corner of the world!
*** Completed excavation of a pipe. The bend in the bowl
is at 544/326.
Toward the end of my operation, the air pulse did not seem
to be working (unless the lack of result simply indicates
that there was nothing to be unearthed).
Had a couple of weird interactions between Netscape 1.0 and
the images. My pages went wild, and I had to exit Netscape
and re-enter the login sequence to get images back.

Having huge problems with transfer rates,so much for the

Very Impressive, even though i have a very slow connection
and managed to lose it half way through!
A brilliant idea and an excellent demonstration of what
it is possible to achieve on the web, Well done!

Absolutely intriguing!! Imagine the future application for this technology!
Certainly advances in speed of responsiveness will come, but if somehow those queued to control could receive automated updates, it would seem for streamline and interactive.
Great idea you guys! How about a mobile robot we could use to navigate a maze?!
Cool... I found something circular, but dunno what it was...
Stone or mouse.. ;)
Anyway.. Great! Tnx the providers!
Either the air-jet has stopped working, or this is really
just a virtual dig, and the resolution of the discovery
stages is coarse. hmmmmm... Very interesting though. Thanks
for a moment of fun.
I seem to have uncovered a notebook of some kind at the
viscinity of (x,y) = (134,333). It appears machine-printed.
What am I looking for? Do I get a prize like a USC scholarship
if I find that special prize...kind of like high tech

Good job

*** Cool. I have no idea what I was looking at, but I had fun. Thanks!
did'nt see much, not enough time, but I may know why.
very interesting
came across a piece of paper with the annotation
"Agate chips were used as points for spears & arrows"

Most perplexing .. *** Just what *is* the object located at
~327x353? I need to figure out how to catch the pix so I can
put them together later.
I like it. *** The wristband? in the right corner looks
fairly strange.
Kudos for a new and difficult web use, but I
did not experience a real feeling of control, perhaps
because I had no larger map of the space or a better
feeling of postion than the xyz values.
The control panel image wasn't being downloaded to my
browser, so I was unable to move the robot.
I seem to be completely unable to receive images from
the excavation site. What format are they in when processed?
I may need to find a suitable viewer...
--b.
No video, only had a question mark icon. Is the robot on
all the time. Great idea, will try again later.
Had trouble getting video signal.
I'll try again...
...real slow .. but it was 2:27 mst...i really never got
it to work
very cool idea thoguh

Weeeelllllllll, It looked like it might be fun to try, but
everytime I got to the top of the queue, the system would
not send me any graphics. Hard to drive by brail.
*** Found dictionary page with definition of Mosaic and
something with NASA on it (couldn't tell what). This
is a great Web resource!
Fascinating. Where is the biggest delay in the feedback loop?
The Internet's bandwidth? Web/camera/... processing time?
I'd love a more "real time" like experience over my T1 line.
Fascinating. Think this could grow up to be an arcade
game?
***Really good stuff, folks!!!
This is really wild!! The whole idea has prompted me to imagine the variety of uses this could have, both practical and fun!!! The 'Net let's go of another gem! *** I found the whistle, a battery, and a long silver object. I'll be back again to find more...

Very Odd Photograph. Metal Key? Circular(?) Pin
Facinating.
Photograph in too good shape to have been out

** There was also a pieca of paper with writing on it.
It is a tad slon on a 14.4k PPP link, and It really didn't seem like even close to 5 minutes.
Very Interesting..
It would be cool to have a wide-view photo of the robot and the site available on-line

My first time to actually operate this thing. Too cool.
*** Cleared what appears to be a photograph of a stylized
human head with some graphics on it. If I don't miss
my guess, it's some hebrew of other middle eastern
language. Sorry I didn't note the coordinates. I was
too excited.
This looks great!!!
Could use a faster modem so that my time in the driver's
seat can be more productive.
This time I new what I was doing, so it was really cool.
***I think I found a dog, or some other animal's tag, with

well, again, i think the turns need to be longer if no one is waiting, however i still LOVE this idea.
It seemsed odd that i was the only one waiting (not that i'm complaining :) i do have one suggestion, possibly
adding some kind of a feature that lets your turn go longer, if no one's waiting. All-in-all it's a great feature!
What kind of surface am i looking at?
*** I think, I could see some sort of cable.

Well, the robot is working great now!
Dang thing needs glasses though. Bad far and near

A bit of pen down there!
*** There seemd to be a face carved in a rock? but I faild

It was great fun. Thanks
***Page of writing, first discovered by Rik, further excavated by
myself. Names and dates - a bit unclear to read before energy ran out
but several possibilities suggested themselves - newspaper, either obituary or
marriages, judging from glimpses, or possibly reviews of something. Further study
of the page would be needed before a final analysis could be done.
Nothing specifically discovered by me this time, though
I did notice the results of other people's excavations.
I was operating the system and uncovered an object that
had writing on it, however my time at the controls expired
and I could not discern what it was. I will observe the next
operator.
I am fascinated by your project, and am glad to see that
the general public can experience and marvel at your
"pushing" the technological envelope.
Thank you, tmiles@iquest.net

This is my second time at the Robot.
For some reason, my password did not work (it was not a typo. I save these tings to my note pad and then cut and paste...)
The focus at the closest level is bad. You seem to have a fixed focal lenght lense. You might try increasing the light level (hoping that the aperature can be reduced to increase depth of field.)
This is a great exhibit. Hats off to you guys!!!

*** I found something that looked like a plant and a piece of paper
with printing on it.
It was nice but just when I was about to make a
breakthrough I got shut down. My last time hwhen I logged in
I my time was almost done by the time I wstarted control it.
Was veryi interesting and fun. 5 minutes is a bit
shoet. Ten minutes would make a session useful.I am using
it from home using SPRY AIR MOSAIC. I was able to get about
5 moves in.
*** Found something at 550,548 but could not uncover it all
the way.
ATTENTION!!! The problem has been resolved. Happy Hunting.
Steven.
Add my name to the list of folks accessing via Netscape 1.0
and 14.4 modem who got to operate a machine I couldn't
see. Perhaps I am doing something wrong...
All I got was the small blue bordered ? box below message
that said I was in control. Clicking on this brought
a "long" wait with a clock ticking...
No response from the host...
All I got in the robot operator page was a small question
mark between the energy level and the red-square menu. I was
using Netscape on Windows.
Aside from that, the site looks cool & the idea is
brilliant!
Regards, Luka.
a highly difficult and interesting game to master.
playing however is easy enough. this game is not for those
short on time however if excellence is to be achieved.
Couldn't get picture (it's worked for me in the past).
I never got the image on my screen. At the Operator's screen, there was a message stating that I was now operating the
robot, but I never saw the picture....
I couldn't get it to work either...
I'm running Netscape 1.0 over a 14.4kb modem, is this
a configuration that's supposed to work?
Oh well...
FOR SOME REASON MY NETSCAPE VIEWER REFUSED TO SHOW THE OPERATOR SCREEN.
gOT ANY SUGGESTIONS?
My correct address is:
gkdarby@students.wisc.edu
Unfortunately it didn't work. The browser I was using was
Netscape 1.0N, from a direct connection on a University.
When I clicked on the map the host would never respond.
-still was interesting, though.
-gk.
Not sure if problem is at my end or yours, but I could
get no response to any commands. Using Netscape 0.9.
Great idea to show the possibilities of the net!
Is this usable over a 14.4 link??
Thanks,
Charlie....
It just sat there at waiting for reply!!
Well, I couldn't get it to work...
Neat idea, but with the handling of a dead slug, the robot just doesn't offer the performance I demand from today's engineering.
I made two attempts, and watched two other operators, and
no one was able to move the robot. I think she's dead Jim.
This seems like an interesting concept, and I would love
to try it out, but it didn't seem to be working when I got
my chance to get in the drivers seat. I could observe just
fine, but everything froze up when I was the operator.
Did anyone else have the same experience?
Oh well, I guess I will just have to come back later.
Hmmm. I quit early because I wasn't getting any response
from the server after trying to move (vertically). I
haven't seen the image change in the last 15 minutes, so
I think there is a problem.
But I'll be back!
Why doesn't this damn thing work?
it didn't work. when i tried to move something it just sat there after the connect message.
Couldn't get the arm to move. Looks like people haven't been having much success today in moving it.
Using Netscape 1.00N for Windows as my WWW browser.
I was not able to move the arm. How long does it take
for a typical request to be honored? I waited up to
30 seconds for each request before giving up.
My Web Browser is MacWeb 1.00a3 on an Mac LC I.
Wow ! This looks like a landmark demonstration of Internet usage. It's a shame that things
are a bit bugged, though (as of 20:36,Thurs Jan26). I'll be back!
-Jer
Argh. Still stuck at the same coordinates.
I guess the little green men jammed the matchbook in the
robot's elbow so they could have a "Conquest of Planet
Earth" meeting at the site without anyone peeking in.
*** I might not have been patient enough, but it seemed that the arm was not functioning today. I observed 2 others before me not change the image or the position of the arm. I hope it is not permanently broken because it is a great idea. Not quite tele-presence, but certainly tele-control.
1/26/95 14:30 CST The arm has been stuck x=241 y=471 z=0 for at least 2 1/2 hours. I've seen at least 6 people try to use it.
Help
Well, it looks nice, but I couldn't get anything to move.
Of course that seems to be the way most of the WWW works.
very cool again.
Didn't see to have much luck driving the robot. When I clicked to move the arm, I just locked up waiting for a response. Cool idea though. Potentially great demo of remote sensing and control.
