National Work and Family Month
October is National Work and Family Month. To recognize the University of Southern California’s outstanding support of work-life efforts, the Center for Work
and Family Life is highlighting family-friendly benefits, policies, or programs that help employees balance the demands of life at work and outside of work.
A lack of balance in an employees life, can contribute to stress, fatigue, absenteeism and presenteeism (physically present for work, but mentally absent, unfocused,
and unproductive). The ability to focus on work at work is often diminished when employees are worried about family or personal concerns. Conversely, they may be inattentive
at home because they’re consumed with job demands. Consequently, both work and home life can become unfulfilling, unhealthy and unproductive.
Programs, which foster a family-friendly environment throughout the university, assist with an employee’s ability to balance work and family life and contribute
to:
- Attracting new employees
- Retaining and recruiting staff
- Improving morale
- Reducing absenteeism
- Enhancing working relationships
- Increasing productivity and job satisfaction
- Decreasing stress and burn-out
