Basic Stock Research Methodology





I. Find the Most Recent Proxies

   A. Use
         10KWizard (Now a "for fee" site)
          http://www.tenkwizard.com/
         1. Select "Filings"
         2. Type in Prospect Name. Use most complete version of name available, i.e. use middle initial.
             You will need to try name with and without initials and compare results.
         3. Select Form Group: "Proxies, Information statements"
         4. Choose date range:  "All Dates" is best for starters; you can shorten date range if you get too much info
             Results can be sorted by date
         5. Collect stock holding info for each company proxy (most recent) found

     B. For "free" list & proxies, use

Edgar Online People
http://www.edgar-online.com/people/
1. Type in Prospect Name.
2. Choose "Proxy Statements" in "Form Type"
3. Click on "search"
4. To view proxy results, you must register. This is free for proxies only. Any other documents found by Edgar Online People are available only for a fee.
5. You can print list from this service and then look up the proxies on Hoover's Online or Yahoo!Finance, if you prefer.


II. Look for Changes since the Most Recent Proxy

    Go to
            Yahoo!Finance
           http://finance.yahoo.com/
            1. Type in ticker symbol and click on "Get"
            2. Click on "insider" in the "More Info" section of the company info box
            3. Check the list for trades by your prospect since the most recent proxy
            4. Click on insider's name to view details.

III. Look for Splits since the Most Recent Proxy

     1. Visit
           Big Charts
          http://bigcharts.marketwatch.com/
            1. Type in company ticker
            2. Click on "Java Chart"
            3. On results page, choose time since most recent proxy under "Chart Options"
            4. Click on "Java Chart" to get the new chart to appear
            5. Splits will by marked by green circles with dollar signs on them
            6. Adjust number of shares by split number (2:1; 8:7, etc)

      2. Go to
          The L.A. Times
          http://www.latimes.com/
          1. Scroll down to "get news & quote" search box on the right-hand side
          2. Type in ticker and hit "Quote"
          3. On the Ouote Page, type ticker in the "Quote Search" at top
          4. Choose "historical splits" in the drop down menu on the right
          5. Click on "Go" for a list of splits

IV. Look for Current Price

      Click to
            Hoover's Online
           http://www.hoovers.com/
            1. Type in company name
            2. On Capsule page, click on ticker symbol in upper right for latest quote
            3. Use number listed as "Last"

V. Review Sources for Additional Info

     Return to
        10KWizard
         http://www.tenkwizard.com/
        1. Select "Filings"
        2. Type in Prospect Name. Use most complete version of name available, i.e. use middle initial.
            You will need to try name with and without initials
        3. Do not select form type; search all forms
        4. Select "All Dates"
            Remember: you can limit date range if you get too much info to review all at once
        5. Look for documents from companies not picked up in the first search
            Company names can be sorted alphabetically
        6. Collect any new stock holding info

VI. Summarize Information
