Subject: SUMMARY: Wealthy Areas

WOW -- I received an overwhelming response to my request for the

names/zips of the country's wealthiest areas. I sound like a broken

record, but it bears repeating: this list is GREAT!

A number of you asked that I post a summary of responses to the list,

so here goes:

Some of the wealthier areas of the U.S.A. include:

MASSACHUSETTS: Andover(01810), Belmont(02178), Avon(02322),

Wayland(01778), Weston(02193), Chestnut Hill(02167), Brookline(02146

& 02147), Dover(02030), Lincoln(01773), Sherborn(01770),

Cambridge(02138 & 02139), Harvard University area, Beacon Hill

(especially Charles, Pinckney, Chestnut, Arlington and Beacon

Streets), Marblehead(01945), Rockport(01966), Beverly(01915), Essex,

Magnolia, Province Town(02667), Oak Bluffs (02557), Sudbury(01776),

Longmeadow(01106), Lenox(01240; a colleague said that this is where

the high school football team is nicknamed "The Millionaires"),

Nantucket(02554), and Martha's Vineyard (Edgartown, 02539) -- these

last two are where the celebrities live.

NEW YORK: in New York City, look for Park Avenue, Fifth Avenue,

Central Park West, Sutton Place or Upper East side -- preferably East

57th St. and above, but not much above 90th Street.

PENNSYLVANIA: in Philadelphia: Chestnut Hill, East Falls, Main Line

(Ardmore, Bryn Mawr, Radnor, Rosemont); in Scranton: Green Ridge

section(18509), Clarks Summit(18411), GlenMaura Development in

Moosic(18507), in Luzerne Co. or the greater Wilkes Barre area:

Harveys Lake(18618), Mountain Top(18707), Laflin(18702); in

Pittsburgh: zips 15143, 15215, and 15238 (colleague advises to be

cautious because the really wealthy areas are only sections within

each of these -- i.e. in 15215 and 15238, look for people who live in

the Fox Chapel neighborhood; in 15143, look for Sewickley or

Sewickley Heights.

MARYLAND: In the Baltimore area: Ruxton -- look for Ruxton Road,

Circle Road, Malvern Avenue, 21204; Guilford(21218) -- look for

Southway, Northway, Charlcote Place, St. Paul Street (3000 and up);

Roland Park(21210) -- look for Club Road; Homeland(21212, majority of

homes are over $200,000); Hunt Valley -- look for Laurelford Court --

new development with homes $500,000-$1M and up; Greenspring Valley

Road(21093?); Pikesville is fairly wealthy, depends on the area --

Old Court Road has nice homes, as does some parts of Park Heights

Avenue. Closer to Washington, D.C.: Bethesda(20814), Chevy Chase,

Potomac

VIRGINIA: McLean, Great Falls

WASHINGTON, D.C.: The Watergate (where the Doles live), Foxhall Road

OHIO: in Columbus: Bexley, New Albany; in Findlay: the streets to

look for are Fox Run, Fox Tail, Britterbrush, Orchard Lane, Windsor

Place, Hunter's Gate, Windsong, Saratoga, South Main Street, Scarlet

Oak, Fox Wood, FoxMoor, and Church Hill; in Dayton: Spring

Valley(some parts; 45370), Springboro(in the newer developments), Oakwood,

most parts of Centerville (try Reigate Rd., Cranston Court); zip 45419 --

look for Ridgeway Rd., Oakwood Ave., Far Hills Ave.; select areas in 45429

& 45459; in Cincinnati: Indian Hill(45243), Hyde Park(45208),

Glendale(45246), and Wyoming(45215).

MISSISSIPPI: in Jackson: the wealthiest area is referred to as

"Northeast Jackson" and is encompassed by the 39211 zip code.

According to our colleague in Jackson, the Eastover area of Northeast

Jackson "contains the priciest real estate, biggest houses, and

wealthiest individuals, some of the wealthiest people in the state,

in fact."

ILLINOIS: in Chicago: Kenilworth(60043), Lake Forest(60045),

Wilmette(60091), Winnetka(60093), Barrington, Kildeer, Oak Brook,

Hinsdale, and selected areas of Naperville and St. Charles.

TEXAS: in Austin: Rollingwood, West Austin; in Houston: West

University, River Oaks, Tanglewood, and Memorial.

WASHINGTON: in Seattle: The Highlands(that's the street address;

98177), Washington Park (39th through 43rd Avenues East; 98112),

Madrona (35th through 40th Avenues; 98122 -- but, overall, this is

not a good zip code), Broadmoor (35th through 39th Avenues East),

Capitol Hill (15th through 22nd Avenues East, Federal, Harvard,

Belmont; 98102), Queen Anne (4th through 10th Avenues West, Highland

W., Aloha W; 98119); also, all homes on McGilvra, Federal, and

Cascadia are in the $500,000+ range or higher.

CALIFORNIA: San Bernardino (92404), Palm Desert and Palm Springs area

(92201-92299). Our colleague's guess was that if they are 50+ years

old and have an address of Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, La Quinta,

Palm Desert, Indian Wells, Palm Springs, or Bermuda Dunes, they MIGHT

be well off.

THE FOLLOWING RESOURCES WERE ALSO RECOMMENDED TO HELP FIND THIS TYPE

OF INFO.:

1. The July/August 1996 issue of "Worth" magazine which lists

America's 300 richest towns and 50 top city neighborhoods.

2. Rich zip code web sites: http://www.edu/~ppatton/richzips.html

and http://www.tray.com/fecinfo/ (I haven't tried either of these

yet)

3. The CACI Sourcebook of Zipcode Demographics which gives median

household incomes by zip and % of homes earning a certain amount

(costs about $500, but info. is also available through Dialog, File

581 Population Demographics. Data in the file is drawn from U.S.

Census Bureau material, updated demographic statistics, buying power

indices, SIC counts, and standard occupation classification totals of

employees and key occupations. You can select counties or cities with

median household incomes of greater than/equal to a certain $ and

sort the selected records by zip)

4. Check the Wall Street Journal of Jan. 17, p. B10

5. MONEY Magazine, Jul/Aug. `96

6. The 1990 US census is searchable on the web at:

http://venus.census.gov/cdrom/lookup

Our colleague found some of the most useful information by looking up

a zip code and then clicking on the household income tables.

Again, many many thanks to everyone who responded to this request. I

am sure that there is much more that could be added to this list, so

if anyone wants to contribute his/her two cents, I know it would be

welcomed. Please post to the list or e-mail me directly, and I will

summarize again.

What a great bunch you are! Thanks for all the help! :) :) :) :)
