Lani Guinier, nominated by President Clinton for attorney general in the
Justice Department's civil rights division, law professor at the
University of Pennsylvania and a vigorous advocate of equal rights for
African-Americans and other minorities, appears as part of the USC
Spectrum Distinguished Lecture Series.
Ms. Guinier is a controversial advocate for political approaches which
de-emphasize race. Through the political empowerment of minorities by
changing current voting practices from "culmulative voting" to voting
based on "minority districts." She is also working to set up a White
House conference on civil rights which, while focused on civil right
issues, will be much like the international economic summits in format.
