William Greider is an award-winning author and the national editor of ROLLING STONE magazine who has reported on politics from the nation's capital for the past twenty-five years. Greider's latest book is called Who Will Tell The People: The Betrayal of American Democracy.
William Greider was born and raised in Wyoming, Ohio a suburb of Cincinnati, where he attended public schools. He studied at Princeton University majoring in English Litterature and American Studies, and was graduated in 1958.
After srving in the army, Greider started his newspaper career at the DAILY JOURNAL in Wheaton, Illinois. In 1962, he joined the staff of the LOUISVILLE TIMES in Louisville, Kentucky, where he covered education, politics, and the state legislature. In 1966 he becam eWashington correspondent for the LOUISVILLE TIMES and its sister paper, the COURIER-JOURNAL.
In 1968, Greider joined the national staff of the WASHINGTON POST as a genral assignment reporter. His coverage included presidential campaigns, civil disorders, Watergate Investigations, and the economic disorders of the '70s. In 1979 he became editor of "Outlook," the PSOT's Sunday opinion section, and a year later became assistant managing editor of national news. He also wrote a Sunday opinion column entitled "Against the Grain." In May 1982, Greider returned to full-time writing as the national editor of ROLLING STONE, writing a bi-weekly column on politics and national affairs. His book, Secrets of the Temple: How the Federal Reserve Runs the Country, published in 1987, won the LOS ANGELES TIMES Book Prize.
Greider's other honors include the George Polk Award, the Champion prize for economics, and a national magazine award from the American Society of Magazine Editors. A 1985 collaboration with filmaker Sherry Jones for FRONTLINE, "Retreat from Beirut," was awarded a national Emmy.
Greider and Washington, D.C.-based producer Sherry Jones have also collaborated on "Taxes Bhind Closed Doors," "The Dillusionment of David Stockman," and "War on Nicaragua."
Another FRONTLINE project, "The Politics of Prosperity," was a 1988 election special in which Greider explored the growing debate over how the next rpesident should traet America's stagerring trade and budget deficit.
Greider's latest collaboration with PBS, a frontline special, "The Betrayal of American Democracy," aired last April.
