The Uptow String Quartet is one of the most unusual and important
string quartets to emerge in recent years. Its members bring a wealth of
experience in both classical and jazz music to create a unique sound of
their own. Skilled improvisors and polished ensemble players, they
traverse a tremandous range of music and match their epansive techniques
and subtle dynamic shades to the demands of each piece they perform. A direct outgrowth of the Max Roach Double Quartet, the Uptown String Quartet has launched a highly successful independent career, begining with their debut CD on Polygram label and their New York debut at the 92nd Street Y in 1990. That debut recording, Max Roach presents the Uptown String Quartet, presented a variety of pieces commisioned especially for the rcording from various composers selected by Max Roach. Just Wait A Minute, their 1992 Bluemoon release album was also met with tremendous critical acclaim. The UptownString Quartet is everything, you wouldn't expect a string quartet to be. With Classical music backgrounds and string training, these women dvote themselves to al styles of music of the African-American cultural heritage. Their repertory includes all original works and arrangements that cove jazz, the blues, ragtime, spirituals, and rythm and blues. Their music was featured on the soundtrack of Spike Lee's film, Do the Right Thing, and they have appeared in television programs The Cosby Show, CBS Nightwatch, The Today Show, The Eleventh Hour, and the WGBH program Say Brother. |
