8/23/99 6:30 PM: A ferry boat captain reported that one of his crew was sleeping on board at the time of the quake. He said the crewman reported hearing rushing water and felt the boat drop. The water came back but did not over top the pier. We could find no tsunami trace on the grass behind the piers. There was evidence of ground failure from strong shaking (see photo below).

Izmit is a large town which experienced strong ground shaking and severe damage.
