This journal is a continuation of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, Series A: Mathematical and Physical Sciences. The title changed in 1990 to Philosophical Transactions: Physical Sciences and Engineering. In 1996, the journal's name changed again to its present title to better reflect its subject coverage.
The journal majors on multi-authored selected Themes (symposia in print), reviews (normally by a selected single, authoritative author) and reports of the Royal Society's world-renowned Discussion Meetings. From its inception in 1665, it has been essential reading for the physical sciences community.
