A DOI is a unique and permanent identifier assigned by a registration agency (International DOI Foundation) that will takes one to a Web page (URL) associated with that DOI name. DOIs are found in many databases and references and are usually included on the first page of journal articles.
Citations styles, for example APA, include the DOI alphanumeric string since it provides a persistent link.
