Edison Challenge 2007

Advisors of 2007 Edison Challenge teams were invited to participate in a series of teacher workshops held at USC and Edison facilities. These workshops featured grade-appropriate, inquiry-based, hands-on activities and provided curricular materials and kits for classroom use. | Workshop #1: |
Get energized! Investigate the science of energy |
| Date: |
Saturday, November 18, 2006 |
| Time: |
8:30 am – 3:30 pm |
| Location: |
Edison’s CTAC facility, Irwindale |
| Objective: |
We’ll explore various forms of energy (light, heat, motion, sound, electricity), and how energy is transformed into other forms (potential vs. kinetic). We will also investigate how energy is transferred through ecosystems via the food chain. |
| Workshop #2: |
Got power? Discover the sources of energy |
| Date: |
Saturday, January 27, 2007 |
| Time: |
8:30 am – 3:30 pm |
| Location: |
University of Southern California, Los Angeles |
| Objective: |
We’ll explore different energy renewable vs. non-renewable resources (biomass, hydropower, geothermal vents, wind, solar, petroleum, natural gas, coal, propane, nuclear). We will also investigate the primary source of biological energy on earth, the sun, and how living organisms are interconnected through photosynthesis and fossil fuels. |
| Workshop #3: |
Getting wise: Energy efficiency & conservation |
| Date: |
Saturday, February 24, 2007 |
| Time: |
8:30 am – 3:30 pm |
| Location: |
Edison Corporate Offices, Rosemead |
| Objective: |
We’ll explore how energy is used (formation, exploration, production, distribution, consumption, and environmental and economic trade-offs), and how energy is conserved in the natural world. We’ll also investigate new energy efficient technologies and ways to conserve energy at home and at school. |
| Workshop #4: |
Making connections: Energy & the environment |
| Date: |
Saturday, March 10, 2007 |
| Time: |
8:00 am – 5:00 pm |
| Location: |
USC Wrigley Marine Science Center, Catalina Island |
| Objective: |
We’ll explore how energy is utilized in a setting with limited resources, and how to sustain natural communities and the human communities that depend on them. Catalina Island field experiences will promote a better understanding of energy, natural resources, and the environment. |
| Note: |
You must attend 2 of the 3 other workshops offered to be eligible to participate in the Catalina Island workshop. |
