Teacher Workshop Series 2007-2008
Once you register for the Team competition of the Edison Challenge, you are invited to attend a series of science workshops to be held at USC and Edison facilities. You are not required to attend the Saturday workshops, they are entirely optional to participating in the competition.
By attending the workshops, you will receive grade-appropriate, inquiry-based, hands-on activities, as well as free curricular materials and science kits to take back for classroom use – plus related science content talks by research scientists and supplemental content resources.
Additional incentives include:
- $100 participation stipends available for each full workshop attended (inquire about salary point course credit in lieu of stipend)
- Travel reimbursements (reimbursement for round trip mileage in excess of 50 miles per workshop)
- Free classroom materials
- Professional development hours
- Trip to USC’s Wrigley Marine Science Center on Catalina Island (must have attended two of the three other workshops offered to be eligible)
Once you register your Edison Challenge team, you will be contacted regarding further details of the workshop series and how to sign up to participate.
Dates and details about the workshops:
Thank you for your interest in the Edison Challenge Teacher Workshops,

| Workshop #1: |
Energy |
| Date: |
Saturday, November 17, 2007 |
| Time: |
8:30 am – 3:30 pm |
| Location: |
University of Southern California, Los Angeles |
| Objective: |
We’ll explore different energy resources especially those related to electricity, different methods of electrical generation, current and voltage, photovoltaic cells, and energy conversion.
Participants will take home digital multimeters (measure voltage, resistance, and milliamperage), hand cranked electricity generators, capacitors for storing electricity, silicon solar cell arrays, lights, and unique heat powered boats. |
| Workshop #2: |
Alternative Energy |
| Date: |
Saturday, December 1, 2007 |
| Time: |
8:30 am – 3:30 pm |
| Location: |
Southern California Edison Corporate Offices, Rosemead |
| Objective: |
We will investigate different types of energy, especially renewable energy types (wind, solar heating, solar voltaic, and biofuels).
Participants will take home a watt-meter (measures amount of electrical consumption of each appliance), home-made and commercial solar ovens, windmill, anemometer, and a Hero’s Engine. |
| Workshop #3: |
Conservation and Insulation |
| Date: |
Saturday, January 26, 2008 |
| Time: |
8:30 am – 3:30 pm |
| Location: |
Edison’s Mountainview Power Plant, Redlands CA |
| Objective: |
We’ll see how energy is used to produce electricity (fuel, combustion, turbines, generators, transformers, distribution systems, and environmental and economic trade-offs). We will look at how energy is conserved in the natural world and investigate ways to save even more. We’ll also investigate energy efficient technologies and ways to conserve energy at home and at school.
Participants will take home a battery-free flashlight, radiometer for measuring infrared radiation, a box that demonstrates different insulations, and a bimetallic thermostat that each participant makes themselves. |
| Workshop #4: |
Sustainability |
| Date: |
Saturday, March 1, 2008 |
| Time: |
8:00 am – 5:00 pm |
| Location: |
USC Wrigley Marine Science Center, Catalina Island |
| Objective: |
We’ll explore how energy is utilized in a setting with limited resources, and how to sustain natural communities and the human communities that depend on them. Catalina Island field experiences will promote a better understanding of energy, natural resources, and the environment. (snorkeling and kayaking equipment will be supplied).
Participants will take home memories of a fun day in the ocean along with UV sensitive beads and a solar powered lighter than air balloon. |
| Note: |
You must attend two of the three other workshops offered to be eligible to participate in the Catalina Island workshop. |
