Oscar Cobian was raised in Camarillo, California, and he is the first in his family to receive a college degree. He began working with the Traditional Upward Bound Program at California Lutheran University in 1996. In 2005, he became the executive director of the Educational Opportunity Programs Center at USC..
Oscar graduated from California State University, Northridge (CSUN) in 1994 with a bachelors degree in Spanish Language and Culture and a Bilingual Emphasis Teaching Credential. As a student at CSUN, he became active in the university outreach programs for at-risk and academically disadvantaged students in the San Fernando Valley. He worked as an academic advisor, tutor, and instructor for the College Readiness Program and the Arts Resource Center at CSUN. The experience of working with highly underserved middle and high school students impacted his decision to enter the field of education. He received a masters degree in Counseling and Guidance from California Lutheran University. His future goal is to receive a Doctorate in Educational Administration from USC.
Oscar is the past president of the Southern California Chapter of the Western Association of Educational Opportunity Personnel (WESTOP) and Co-Chair of the 2005 WESTOP Conference. WESTOP is a professional organization for TRIO and educational equity personnel in California, Nevada, Arizona and the Pacific Islands. He is the recipient of the Community Hero Award for his involvement with the youth of Ventura County. |
