David Galaviz

Director, Community Outreach
USC Civic and Community Relations

As director of Community Outreach, Galaviz assists in developing community outreach strategies for USC’s Health Sciences Campus; advises in the development, implementation and documentation of program policies and procedures; assists in researching and identifying community needs; recommends program changes or new programs; and assists in the design and delivery of programs, services and special events.

Galaviz oversees all elements of the USC Health Sciences Campus Partner School Task Force and works closely with Francisco Bravo Medical Magnet High School and Griffin, Murchison and Sheridan elementary schools as well as the East Los Angeles Occupational Center and East Los Angeles Skills Center.

He is responsible for USC Civic and Community Relations government relations, all outreach activities associated with USC Biomedtech and related construction efforts, and coordinating the USC Government Relations Council. Galaviz also works closely with the Los Angeles City Council, Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the USC offices of State and Federal Relations. He currently serves as USC’s representative on the Community Redevelopment Agency of Los Angeles Adelante Eastside Project Area Committee.

In 2006, Galaviz participated in the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce “Leadership Los Angeles” program. In 2005, he was elected president of the Lincoln Heights Neighborhood Council. He currently serves as board member for the Boyle Heights Chamber of Commerce, Salesian Boys and Girls Club, and Salesian Family Youth Centers of Los Angeles.

Prior to joining USC in 2003, Galaviz was legislative director for Senator Gilbert Cedillo. During his tenure, he was responsible for a five-year campaign to protect public safety by allowing immigrants to apply for driver's licenses. As part of the campaign, he handled media relations and provided strategic assistance to organizations across the country.

He was born and raised in Boyle Heights and earned a bachelor's degree in Political Science from California State University, Los Angeles, and a master's degree in Public Administration from USC.
