Section III: Social Indicators
In addition to total population and ethnicity, the decennial census collects a variety of other information about individuals, households and housing. This section of the "Atlas of USC Neighborhoods: People and Community" examines those areas as related to USC's University Park and Health Sciences campuses. Here, some of these census measures are displayed to provide perspectives on the social conditions of people and their neighborhoods. As in Section II, data from 14 census tracts are used to represent the University Park neighborhood, and 10 represent the Health Sciences neighborhood.
In this section, Charts 3 through 8 compare the neighborhoods surrounding USC's campuses with the city and county of Los Angeles in terms of levels of education attained (3), income (4), language spoken at home (5), household composition and size (6 and 7), and year of immigration for people born outside of the United States (8). Charts 9, 10 and 11 show employment status and employment by occupation and industry for the neighborhoods.
Maps 19, 20, 21 and 22 show spatial patterns of poverty in 2000 and change in poverty between 1990 and 2000 in central Los Angeles; and charts 12 and 13 show poverty levels in the neighborhoods surrounding USCs neighborhoods for 1990 and 2000 as compared to the city and county of Los Angeles. Housing characteristics are depicted in maps 23, 24, 25 and 26, and charts 14 through 18. Characteristics included are owner and rental occupancy (housing "tenure"), age and types of housing units, and rental and owner property values.
