Faculty Awards

Since the group’s founding, members of the USC Associates have supported awards for faculty at the University of Southern California — recognizing outstanding teachers as “the heart of a university and the essential element of our future greatness.” Faculty awards were the highlight of the annual USC Associates dinners from 1960 until 1982, when President Zumberge and the Academic Senate inaugurated the university’s Academic Honors Convocation. Since that time, the USC Associates faculty awards — the highest honors the university bestows upon its faculty — have been conferred on this occasion.

Winners of the USC Associates faculty awards for 2009 are:

USC Associates Award for Creativity in Research and Scholarship (honoring distinguished intellectual and artistic achievement that has resulted in a significant impact on a discipline at the interface of disciplines, or in the creation of viable new areas of scholarly activity; two $7,500 awards bestowed each year)
• Paul Daniel Dapkus, William M. Keck Chair in Engineering; Chair, Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering (Electrophysics), USC Viterbi School of Engineering
  
• Edward J. McCaffery, Robert C. Packard Trustee Chair in Law; Professor of Law, Economics and Political Science, USC Gould School of Law
   
USC Associates Award for Excellence in Teaching (recognizing career achievements in teaching with an emphasis on concrete accomplishments and proven results; two $7,500 awards bestowed each year)
• Chi Mak, Professor of Chemistry; Vice Chair of Chemistry, USC College of Letters, Arts & Sciences
  
• Doe Mayer, Mary Pickford Endowed Chair, USC School of Cinematic Arts and Professor of Communication, USC Annenberg School for Communication
