New Seminar on Religion and Public Life

We are pleased to announce a new seminar on led by Paul Lichterman (Sociology/Religion) and Diane Winston (Journalism/ Communications/ American Studies and Ethnicity/ Religion). Beginning in September 2008, members of the USC community, scholars from other southern California institutions, and specially invited guests will gather to discuss papers in progress, distributed beforehand, that explore religion and public life, broadly defined. The seminar will explore such questions as:

  • How do different kinds of religion enter public life in different societies?
  • What are religious ways of being political/doing politics?
  • How do people create public, religious identities in different contexts and what do they do with those identities?
  • How does religion become politicized or depoliticized?
  • How is religion represented in media?
  • How do political and social environments shape religious expression?
  • How do religion and politics influence or constitute one another in international relations?
