What are the elegibility requirements to donate Blood?
You must be in good health with no risk factors for transmitting diseases to others.

What are the age limits for blood donation?
You must be at lease 17 years old. There is no upper limit as long as you are in good health.
I am taking certain medications, can I still donate blood?
There are some medications which may make you ineligible for blood donation. For more information, click here.
What tests are done on blood?
Blood is tested for the AIDS, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HTLV 1/2 viruses. The blood is also tested for syphilis.
If I have a positive blood test, how will I be notified.
You will receive a letter. In some cases you will also receive a telephone call.
What kind of questions will be asked when I come to donate?
You will be asked about your health and whether you are at risk for certain diseases including AIDS, hepatitis, mad cow disease, SARS, and West Nile virus.
How long does it take to donate blood?
It usually takes about 45 minutes from the time you walk in to the time you leave. Platelet donation takes longer.
Will I gain weight from donating blood?
No, you will actually loose a little weight.
Can I get a disease from donating blood?
No, all of the needles are sterile and disposible. They are never used twice.
Is there any substitute for blood?
No. Currently there are no substitutes for blood, however, there have been many attempts, and research is ongoing.
