Platelets are tiny cell fragments found in the blood. A certain number of healthy platelets are necessary to keep a person from bleeding.
Some patients do not have enough platelets to keep from bleeding. This is not uncommon for patients who get cancer chemotherapy, have a bone marrow transplants, or who have certain blood diseases.
These patients can bleed to death if platelets are not provided and the only source of platelets is donors like YOU.
Requirements for platelet donation are similar to those of a regular blood donation.
To donate platelets, your blood is processed through a special machine which takes out the platelets and returns the rest of the blood to you. It usually takes about an hour and a half to donate (not counting time spent completeing the usual forms and resting afterwards).
For patients who need platelets, there is no other choice. Every day, platelet donors save lives.
