HISTORY

In June 1954, Dr. Marsh Robinson organized, and was named chairman of, the advanced residency program in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry. The first residents were two individuals selected from the senior dental class to continue their advanced education in this specialty. The Los Angeles County/ University of Southern California Medical Center, the largest teaching hospital in the United States, was designated as the training facility of our residency program.

Dr. Robinson directed the residency program from 1954 to 1970. From 1970 to 1975 the program was chaired by Dr. Marvin Revzin. The program was co-chaired by Dr. Joseph F. Goodsell and Dr. Donald E. Cooksey from 1975 until 1977. Dr. John J. Lytle served as the chairman from 1977 through 1986. Between 1986 and 1992, Dr. William C. Ardary assumed the chairmanship of the department. Our current director and chairman, Dr. Dennis-Duke R. Yamashita, has been at the position since 1992.
