ON CALL

The call in this program is in-house. Residents are required to be at the LAC/USC medical center during the entire time of call duty. Calls usually involve evaluation and treatment of odontogenic infections, dentoalveolar and maxillofacial trauma. Residents who are not on weekend calls are not required to be at the medical center. Weekend calls are 24 hours starting at 8am. Our program currently does not follow the 80- hour rule as OMS is not under ACGME regulations.

  • Call frequency is determined according to seniority in the program.
  • Interns or 1st year residents ~ 5-9 calls/month
  • 2nd year residents ~ 3-6 calls/month
  • 3rd year (or 5th year in the 6-yr curriculum) residents ~ 0-4 calls/month
  • Residents in the final year of their curriculum do not take calls.

Backup call is taken by the JOW, Trauma Surgeon, and Chief Resident for the month from their homes.
