OPERATIVE EXPERIENCE

Major operative experiences include maxillofacial trauma, orthognathic surgery, pathology and reconstruction, among others. In terms of trauma, our service treats all isolated mandible fractures and 1/3 of all midface or panfacial trauma (the other 2/3 goes to ENT and plastics) at the LAC/USC medical center. With orthognathic surgeries, we receive direct referrals from many community orthodontists as well as the USCSD orthodontic department. We also operate at the USC University Hospital, CHLA, and Rancho Los Amigos medical center. Please view our OMS service statistics for a complete breakdown of the various operations performed by our department this past year.

Academic and Research Opportunities

We were accredited by the ADA this year and received no recommendations. We received one accommodation for academics. This accreditation will last 5 years until 2009.

Our didactic curriculum consists of the following:

  1. Journal Club is one Friday morning every month at LAC/USC. We review current journal articles in oral and maxillofacial surgery and related disciplines of dentistry and surgery (1.5 hrs)
  2. Book Review is three Friday mornings every month at LAC/USC. We currently review the Fonseca textbook of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (all 7 volumes) and the OMS Knowledge Updates by AAOMS. This is about 100 pages of required reading per week (1.5 hrs)
  3. Implant lecture series and Interdisciplinary Implant Treatment Planning Conference are held every Thursday morning at the USCSD. The conference is attended by all residents and staffs in with Graduate Prosthodontics, Periodontics, and Oral and Maxillofacial departments (2 hrs)
  4. Grand Rounds are every Wednesday morning at LAC/USC (1.5 hrs).
  5. Pathology lecture series is every other two weeks on Thursday mornings at LAC/USC (1.5 hrs)
  6. Cardiology/EKG Interpretation lecture series is every Wednesday for R2 and R3 residents (2 hrs)
  7. Growth, Development, and Orthognathic Surgery lectures series is every Wednesday at 4 p.m. for R3 and R4 residents (1.5 hrs).
  8. Guest lectures and regional conferences
  9. Attending Staff rounds each weekday morning

We are actively engaged in several large trauma studies (collaborating with UCLA) and have a variety of research opportunities with Dr. Anh Le and Dr. Steven Yen at both the USCSD and LAC/USC. Each resident is expected to publish or submit for publication at least one article in a peer reviewed journal before finishing the program.
