RESIDENCY PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Overview of the 4-Year Curriculum Structure

  • Year 1: 4 months of Anesthesia rotation and 8 months of OMS service rotations (Outpatient Clinic, USC School of Dentistry (USCSD), JOW).
  • Year 2: 6 months of OMS service rotations (2 months as Trauma Surgeon, 2-3 months as JOW, 1-2 months at USCSD). 6 months of off-service rotations (2 months on Medicine and 4 months in General Surgery).
  • Year 3: 2 months of off-service elective rotations (Ophthomology, ENT, Plastics or Neurosurgery). 10 months of OMS service rotations (2 months as Trauma Surgeon and 10 months as Junior Surgeon).
  • Year 4: 12 months of OMS service rotations as either the Chief Resident (4 months) or Senior Resident (8 months).

Overview of the 6 Year Curriculum Structure

  • Year 1: 4 months of Anesthesia rotation + 2 months of outpatient clinic (Jul-Dec); 4 months at USC Keck School of Medicine (KSOM) as a 1st year medical student (Jan-Apr); 2 months back on OMS service as JOW or USCSD (May-Jun).
  • Year 2: 10 months at KSOM as a 2nd year medical student (Jul-May). 2 months on service as JOW (June-Jul).
  • Year 3: 12 months at KSOM as a 3rd year medical student to complete all clinical clerkships requirements for graduation from KSOM.
  • Year 4: 12 months of General Surgery internship in an accredited program anywhere in the US (This internship requires separate application and matching process during Year 3).
  • Year 5: 12 months of OMS service with 4 months as Trauma Surgeon, 2 months as JOW or USCSD and 6 months as Junior Surgeon.
  • Year 6: 12 months of OMS service rotations as either the Chief Resident (4 months) or Senior Resident (8 months).

OMS Service Rotations :

Outpatient dental clinic (OPD): The OPD resident is responsible for running the outpatient emergency/dentoalveolar clinic where 30 to 90 patients may be treated per day. The resident performs dentoalveolar surgeries, biopsies, sedation and also participates in teaching rotating USCSD dental students.

JOW (Junior On the Ward): The JOW is assigned to the inpatient OMS department clinic on the 4 th floor. The JOW is responsible for the daily management of OMS inpatients with directions from the Chief Resident and attending staffs. Performs most of the closed reductions (CRMMF) for mandibular fractures. Performs all inpatient OMS consults. Performs sedations, biopsies, and works on otherwise difficult-to-manage patients (MR or kids). Perform ORIF on selected mandible/midface fractures on the 4 th floor clinic when the case is indicated and the OR is overfilled.

Trauma Surgeon: The Trauma Surgeon performs most of the ORIF of mandibular fractures in the LAC/USC medical center main O.R. Assists the Chief Resident in midface fractures and panfacial fractures cases.

Junior Surgeon: The Junior Surgeon works-up and places dental implants at the LAC/USC medical center. Works-up orthognathic patients with the senior residents. Participates in Orthognathic surgeries. Rotates with Dr. Yamashita at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), Orthopaedic Hospital , Long Beach Memorial Hospital , Rancho Los Amigos Hospital and the USC University Hospital (UH). Assists with dental implant surgeries at the USC School of Dentistry.

Senior Resident: The Senior Resident operates on orthognathic surgery cases and major pathology cases involving resections and reconstruction at LAC/USC medical center with Dr. Yamashita. Operates at CHLA (orthognathic, cleft, distraction) with the director of craniofacial surgery (Mark Urata, graduate of USC OMS Program) on the plastic surgery service. Places dental implants at the USC School of Dentistry. Provides oral surgery services for the dental departments at Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center , Long Beach Memorial Hospital , and CHLA.

Chief Resident: The Chief Resident has the same operating responsibility as a Senior Resident with added responsibilities of operating midface/panfacial fractures, operating orthognathic cases at the UH, and organizing and executing the daily activities of the entire OMS service at the LAC/USC medical center.
