Dr. Chen is pursuing oral microflora that are suspected to
cause periodontal breakdown. Specifically, the previously under-recognized oral
microbe, Eikenella corrodens is being examined by molecular means for
virulence factors. He has developed a sensitive ELISA assay to follow patient
IgG levels to E. corrodens proteins. New sensitive test for periodontal
pathogens are being developed using DNA amplification approaches. These types of
tests are translational applications which are anticipated to aid in the
treatment of the universal disease, periodontitis.
