Dr. Paine collaborates with Dr. Snead in their efforts to search for a molecular basis for amelogenin protein self-assembly. They have developed a yeast two hybrid assay that facilitates the identification and testing of the ability of an amelogenin domains to promote protein to protein interactions. They are now creating amelogenin gene mutations in mice by transgenic and homologous recombination inactivation techniques in order to create a model of amelogenesis imperfecta (AI).
