Dr. Liu is pursuing studies of the role of Msx1, Msx2 and
twist to alter commitment to the osteoblast lineage. This work is part of the
collaborative work ongoing between Drs. Liu, Maxson, and Snead on the
development biology of the mammalian suture. This research team recently showed
that over-expression of a mutant form of Msx2 in transgenic mice alter the rate
of cell division as well as altering the expression of early markers for
osteoblasts. They are pursuing the altered binding of the Msx transcription
factor to regulatory elements in downstream genes, such as osteopontin, bone
sialoprotein and biglycan.
