Dr. Oldak collaborates with Dr. Fincham in pursuits of the
role of amelogenin proteins to regulate biomineralization of enamel. She has
shown that amelogenin undergoes self-assembly into nanospheres and has
postulated that these nanospheres regulate HAP crystal size. She has recently
shown that another previously unknown role for amelogenin is to organize the
initial HAP ribbons ensuring their growth on the crystal C-axis, this promoting
the growth of long HAP crystals that are characteristic of enamel.
