Research Projects

“A Molecular Insight Into Sturge-Weber's Oral Manifestations”

  • Principal Investigator: M. Zeichner-David.

  • Agency: The Sturge-Weber Foundation

  • Period: January 15, 2007 to January 14, 2009.

  • The major goal of this project is to initiate a pilot project designed to understand the oral manifestations of SWS.

"Cementogenesis: Role of Hertwig's Epithelial Root Sheath"

  • Principal Investigator: M. Zeichner-David.

  • Agency: National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research

  • Period: Feb.1, 1999 to April 30, 2008

  • The long-term objective of this project is to test the hypothesis that HERS cells undergo epithelial-mesenchymal transformation to become cementoblast cells which in turn deposit the cementum covering the roots.

"Tissue Engineering Using Mineral Trioxide Aggregate".

  • Principal Investigator: M. Zeichner-David.

  • Agency: American Association of Endodontist Foundation.

  • Period: January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2006.

  • The major goals of this project are to test the hypothesis that MTA can be used for tissue engineering of hard tissues damaged by disease and determine the effect of MTA on cell behavior using odontogenic cell lines in vitro and determine if MTA can stop and regenerate root and bone resorption.

"Root Resorption due to Orthodontic Movement".

  • Principal Investigator: M. Zeichner-David.

  • Agency: National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research

  • Period: May 1, 2004 to April 30, 2007.

  • The major goal of this project is to understand the molecular events associated with the pathological process in the rat animal model that will provide us with the starting point for future studies in humans to facilitate the treatment, prevention and possible early diagnosis of patients at risk of developing root resorption due to orthodontic treatment.

"Tissue Engineering for Periodontium Repair"

  • Principal Investigator: M. Zeichner-David

  • Agency: National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research

  • Period: July 1, 2000 to June 30, 2004

  • The long-term objective of this project is to test the hypothesis that HERS cells (or their products) can be used in tissue engineering to regenerate periodontal tissue.

"Characterization of Molecules Expressed as Consequence of External Root Resorption".

  • Principal Investigator: M. Zeichner-David.

  • Agency: American Association of Endodontist Foundation.

  • Period: July 1, 2002 to June 30, 2003.

  • The major goal of this project is to test the hypothesis that the application of DNA chips to mRNAs obtained from tissues subjected to pulp inflammation will result in the identification of the sequential expression of molecules that can act as signals to initiate the process of root resorpsion.
