The water for the lemonade was taken from the church well. The well water at the church had always been fresh and plentiful. It was here that the McClures got their water when their well ran dry one year earlier.
When Henry told Effie he was feeling nauseous
and weak, they immediately left the church. When they were three-quarters
of the way home, Ethel sensed the seriousness of her husband’s condition
and hurried down the narrow road. Pulling into the driveway, she helped
her husband through the front door and into bed. She cooled his head with
tap water and for a time he seemed to rest a bit more comfortably.
