Created by a dental student in 1993, the Doctors Out to Care program has become a staple of early doctoral dental training. Its mission is to "integrate the School of Dentistry with metropolitan schools;to enhance oral health awareness; and to generate awareness of dentistry as a profession in local communities."
Through the program, freshmandental students provide classroom-based instruction regarding oral health and nutrition at local elementary schools. The dental students are responsible for creating their presentations and working as a team to deliver their message.
The program was formally integrated into the USC Dentistry curriculum in 1997. Since then , the number of children served has grown annually.
