Prevalence of LJP has been estimated at 0.1% to 15% in various populations.1 In a study of over 11,000 14 to 17 year old individuals in the U.S., 0.53% were found to have LJP and another 0.13% had GJP.6,26 The NIDR Adult Survey indicated that 3.6% of 18 to 24 year olds to 5.7% in those aged 30-34 years.7 In the U.S., prevalence of LJP is approximately 10-fold higher in African Americans than in white Americans.8 Even if an estimate of 1%-3% is used, a dental hygienist and dentist could expect to see a few cases per year in a practice with as few as 100 adolescent to young adult patients of record! |
